Remembering Oregon

The last time I was in Oregon was in December of 2006, just a few months after I began fulltiming.
IMG_0228 AI was volunteering  at the Bandon Fish Hatchery, right on the coast.
IMG_0234This was my site at the hatchery.  You might notice the moped.  That was back in the days before I had a toad.  It was mighty chilly driving that moped to town for groceries, I might add.
IMG_0226One of my main jobs was sorting though salmon eggs…one at a time with a tweezers.
IMG_0224Hundreds of thousands of salmon eggs.  What a learning experience that was!
IMG_0214When I wasn’t doing eggs, I was repairing fishing nets.
IMG_0244Salmon was what this hatchery was all about!  I really  enjoyed my time there, and I learned a  lot about fish culture.

Shortly, I’ll be headed to Oregon again, but I don’t think I’ll be seeing any salmon eggs this time.  Malheur National Wildlife Refuge is located no where near the coast, and is in the high desert region of southeastern Oregon.  I always get excited about a new location for volunteering, and this assignment is no exception.  Even though it’s a month away, I can’t wait to get there.  :)  What new things will I learn at this “jewel” of refuges?  I’m hoping there won’t be so many flies and mosquitoes as I’m dealing with right now, but who knows?  I’ll just be happy to get back into the volunteering mode again.

Thanks for stopping by….talk to you later,  Judy

  1. I bet it was very interesting learning all about the workings of a fish hatchery and about the salmon. What a great education!!

I hope you really enjoy your new assignment in Oregon. I can't wait to hear all about it and tag along as you and Emma discover what is around the next corner.

  2. I drove through southeastern Oregon last year on my way from Lassen back east. I knew it would be high desert, but was amazed at how beautiful it was. I'm looking forward to hearing about your work there and seeing pictures of the area.

  3. Sorting through Salmon eggs with a tweezer would not be for me. Had to sort through tables of acorn sprouts at a tree nursery years ago & that did me in pretty quick. It got me insthe upper back between the shoulder blades. I'm sure Sorting fish eggs would have been much worse than that!!

  5. Nice to see someone else do the occasional "blast from the past" as I call them. It's great to remember past trips while preparing for upcoming ones.

You won't find me in followers since I subscribe via RSS ... but I'm here anyway.

  6. We hope to get to Oregon some day, too. I hear it's beautiful.

The mosquitos and flies are terrible in Wisconsin, too. I hear they're bad all over!

  8. WHAT is wrong with the Santa Cruz Mountains in California? We have very few flies or mosquitoes. Earthquakes, yes, but only a few biting bugs.

    I feel left out. :0)

  9. Judy, I also want to know why you were sorting the salmon eggs with tweezers. What was in there? Other kinds of eggs? They all looked pink to me!

  10. Judy, (getting the post out of the bear photo)When I want to remove something, and believe me I'm no expert!, I copy/paste the photo into my Paint program, and just copy/past other sections over the part I want out. I tried it with your bear photo with the post. Sometimes the pasted parts are truly not noticeable, and in your bear photo, it's not too bad. You might try that? Pretty simple fix.
