Today was Pam and Stan’s last day here at Pioneer Family Campground. Emma and I walked over to their site this morning, and we had a good time just chewing the fat. (one of these days I’m going to do a post on colloquialisms)
If you remember, a couple of weeks ago I found a vegetable truck stand that had the most delicious strawberries I’ve had in quite some time. The lady running the stand told me that she was there every day, and that she would have fresh blueberries in July. So, I asked Pam if she’d like to make a run with me for some blueberries. She agreed, and off we headed after lunch for the 20 mile drive.
On the way, I decided to take a short side trip to show her the campground and picnic grove at Willow Slough Fish and Wildlife Area. There were only a few people fishing along the shore today.
We spent some peaceful time in the shade enjoying the lake views before walking around the area. Perhaps you can tell that we are both vertically challenged, and can easily sit on a park bench and swing our feet. I brought Emma along, and when we weren’t trying to get her to pose she spent a lot of time sniffing out all the abundant Canada goose droppings.
There are two fishing piers with seats next to the boat launch. As Emma and I moved back, Pam tried hiding under a tree to get a picture of all the purple martins that are nesting in the four nest box apartments. During the week, this is a very restful spot located in the outback of Indiana. I imagine it gets plenty of use on the weekends, but you really have to know where it is to find it. A little hidden treasure I’d say.
As we continued down the road to the vegetable stand, we ran into a road closure and a detour.
I really enjoy these back road detours when I’m in the car, and not driving the RV. The detour led us through old farmlands, and we came upon this very drafty old barn. Can’t imagine that it would protect much of anything these days, but at least it wasn’t listing to one side.
Close by was an old windmill bordering a large corn field. Just makes you wonder what times this windmill has seen.
When we got to the corner where the vegetable stand was, no one was there. Bummer! Good thing we made the side trip to the wildlife area or the whole trip would have been for naught.
I snapped these two shots last night as Stan grilled our steaks, and George supervised. Other than the passing of Mitzi, it has been a very enjoyable time for me to have Pam and Stan visiting for a week. I will miss them after they leave tomorrow…
Thanks for stopping by… talk to you later, Judy
Sorry to hear your fruit stand was closed. I was hoping for a report on those blueberries. Glad you had such a great visit.
ReplyDeleteSorry about the fruit stand. What a wonderful place to visit. Often times, I pass deserted farms/buildings, and often wonder what their story is, and what became of the people, and why they just walked away.
ReplyDeleteBlueberries are one of my favorite fruits. At one time i had a fruit smoothie every morning with a generous helping of blueberries. Unfortunately they started to darken my teeth! I still enjoy them, but not in as large amounts, and not in smoothies!
ReplyDeletewell bummer! but at least you got some great old farm shots! I like the shot you got of Pam watching the birds too... I like those casual shots of folks!
ReplyDeletesafe travels for them as they head off...
Great pictures. I love old barn shots...don't know why, just do! Too bad about the fruit stand. I just made smoothies with my grand daughters tonight - raspberries, blueberries, and bananas. Yummy. Safe travels to Pam and Stan.
ReplyDeletegreat shot of the old barn!..wonder what is holding it up!!??
ReplyDeleteLove the barn pic! I have a little collection of similar ones that I'd like to post someday...they can't hold a candle to yours though! K
ReplyDeleteNothing like having some fresh blueberries in your cereal or even better in homemade blueberry pancakes... cope you can get some soon.
ReplyDeleteI have always enjoyed driving the old bsck roads

Nothing like meeting up with friends on the road. Great pics too!
ReplyDeleteGreat pics especially the old barn!
ReplyDeleteNice photos! Love the angle you used on the windmill shot.
ReplyDeleteThere is a nostalgia and some mystery connected with these old barns and other abandoned structures. We love to photograph them as well. And we mourn the blueberry trip that came to naught. But you had a good day anyway!
ReplyDeleteNice pictures of you two girls. Sorry you didn't find the blueberries. We are having big sales on them at all the supermarkets right now. We love them and I even buy them frozen to eat on our cereal. Stay cool.
