Another scorcher!

After running the generator for more than 48 hours, the electric and water was restored last night around 9:00.  Just in time too, because it was back up to 95* again today.  Apparently we have one more day of these excessive temps coming tomorrow before a cold front moves through.  We spent a good share of the day inside with the AC running once again.

The usual cast of characters was visiting the café today.

I did venture out this afternoon for a rather disappointing experience in the town of Lake Village.  I decided with the long summer looming ahead that I should probably get a library card at the local library.  I’ve done this before in my travels when I’m in an area for an extended amount of time.

No such luck today.  It seems that in Indiana, you can’t get a library card unless you’re a resident.  They would not accept the campground address.  I could purchase a pass that’s good for the rest of the year, but it costs $60!  That stinks.  I’m hoping my daughter has a library card for Dyer, and that way she can check out books for me.  I’ve never known a library to turn away a person interested in reading.  Sad smile

I stopped at a local beauty parlor on the way back to the rig, and was able to get my hair cut the way I like it for $14.  I guess the trip was not a total loss then.

A little downy woodpecker stopped by briefly to check out the bugs in the oak bark.  That’s about all that’s been going on in my neck of the woods.

Thanks for stopping by… talk to you later,  Judy

  1. So sad about the library, but it's getting to be typical.

Thank goodness you've got electrity again!

  2. I would be sad if I didn't have a library card, or at least a library card that I could use for electronic books. The next best thing, or so I've been told, is to buy books at Costco, that is, if you don't want to buy them at a used bookstore.

I'm glad to hear that your power and water is back on!

  3. You're probably getting our weather and you can have it!!! I would be so bummed if I couldn't get a library card, I use them all the time.

  4. Your weather is headed here ... it wasn't too bad today, but they have all kinds of high temp and bad air quality warnings out from the Blue Ridge to DC all day tomorrow .. and perhaps even the next day. Sorry about the library card situation ... I guess I can see their point of view ... they don't want people just rolling out of a campground and heading for points unknown with their books.

  5. She should be able to get an inter library loan with you library. That way you can get all the books you want.

  6. What's up with the library. Again, I hope your daughter can pull through for you. We're experience high heat and humidity here too. I hate airconditioning, but have to be closed up for another day, then we should cool down on Thursday.

  7. If she has a card you should be able to use it. Do you have a good internet connection at the RV park? Most libraries have ebooks that you can download and read on your lap top. You could use her account, nobody has to know you are not her.

  8. More about the ebooks. Once you download them you don't have to have an internet connection to read them. You could probably download them at the library onto your laptop with her card. I can check out ten ebooks at a time and three audio books. I can set my check out time for 2 or three weeks. Do you have cards from any other libraries? Maybe you can use them. I have to go on a waiting list for most of the really good books, but there is always something to read.

You can also get a free Kindle application on you laptop and get free or reasonable kindle books.

Can you tell I'm a reader?

  9. Pretty darn hot back there, sure glad you had A/C. Too bad about the library card.

    Beautiful bird photos!

  10. glad you got a 'good haircut'!!!..do you know the difference between a bad one and a good one?..six weeks! :)

  11. Whew! That's just too hot. Keep that A/C cranked up.

E-readers are really the way to go. I thought I would miss the feel of a "real" book in my hands and the smell of the ink and the paper...but I don't!! And my hands don't ache after I read a book either. Getting e-books from the library is a good deal too.

  12. I'm really surprised about the library. But I guess they are hurting for money also. You have to have your A/C running and we have the heat on right now. The high tomorrow is only in the 50's. Guess I should appreciate it cause it will get hot eventually.

  13. Do you have a library card for anywhere? Some libraries near camp/RV areas or in tourist places will honor them. I don't know if it is a network or what. Another thought is to ask to make a deposit until the books are returned.

Also, I like Merikay's advice. Consider the download for your computer. The selection of books that are free or very inexpensive ($2.99 or less) is excellent! I rarely pay for a book, only when it is something I'm positive I want to read.

  14. It seems to be hot everywhere. It was over 95 in south IN and now we are in KY and it is still blazing.

I have not had a library card in over five years. I get almost all my books in campground swaps or bookstore deep discount sales.

I am still pondering a kindle to go completely bookless.

  15. weird they don't want you to read...

  16. Kelly generally picks up a library card if we are in an area for any extended time. (Borrego Springs CA & Elfrida AZ) I enjoy reading the history of the area we are in when we are traveling but while home for the summer about the only thing I ever read is the large print on a cereal box.

  17. Happy to learn that your power was restored! Where we live in northern NY, we are sometimes without power for several days at a time, especially in the winter. As for today, the temps are predicted to be in the 95 degree range and lots of humidity.

Gee, that’s a stinking shame about the library; I do not understand that one. Do you have an electronic reader (NOOK, Kindle, etc) or have you thought about this option? They are a really great invention.

  18. That is kind of sad, isn't it that a library would turn readers away! Glad you have electricity once again. I think I wouldn't mind a 95 degree day or maybe just a 70 degree one would do!

  19. I LOVE libraries..I just love going in and reading right there...it's always quiet, cool and soothing. I still cannot get with an e-reader...Some book favs I like to keep on a bookshelf. Glad to hear you are back in the A/C and water...It is to be 97 degrees here today, but 70 tomorrow..which usually means we will spend the better part of the evening watching the radar and listening for the sirens..You and Emma stay safe!!!

  20. Glad the utilities are back on. Life can be a real drain without them.

I think I would try offering a deposit. They could only say no, but it might work. All the libraries in In, are starting to get stricter with their rules. Too many books never find their way back.. Makes it hard on the people that are honest and return them when we are supposed to. Stay cool.

  21. Thank goodness the power came back on!
Now you have to worry about having enough fuel for the generator! UGG
Come on cold front to cool things down!

  22. Thank heavens your electricity and water have returned! Boondocking is fun sometimes, but not when it's this darn h.o.t.!!!

I am old school I guess. I just can not get in favor of those e-readers. I guess I've held a book in my hands for too many years and can't imagine holding one of those. I'm not against technology so that's not it ~ I just got a new droid phone that I love. It has a kindle app, but I'm not going to use it. All of that just makes me wonder why a library would turn away a person, especially of your/my "experience" who was requesting their services. I know neither one of us looks like the type of person that would harm their wares... I truly hope they reconsider for you!!!

  23. Glad to hear your power is back! I have a Sony ereader, and I use my library card I already had from our old life to download free library books to it. The check out time is 14 days. You can put books on hold and get an email when they are available. It's easier than trying to find libraries as you travel. I've heard Kindle's don't work for library downloads, they only work on Amazon. Not sure about that, though.

  24. I didn't expect to like having an eReader but I do. I download free books from ManyBooks.net. It has become my nationwide library. They have so many I'll never be able to read them all in my lifetime. Plus, now I never finish a book only to discover it's the last one and it's too late to go get another one.

  25. I have just assumed that I couldn't get a library card without residency. It hasn't occurred to me to ask, so maybe I will next stop. Here I'm using my mother's card, but that doesn't help you. I don't really blame them, truthfully. Without residence, the odds are against them (not with you, but in general).
