Good news/bad news

The good news is it wasn’t raining when we got up this morning, so we packed up the car and headed for Yellowstone National Park.  We drove to the Canyon area to see the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone.
100_3271 Getting anywhere in this huge park takes time.  It also takes us about 45 minutes just to get to the west entrance from Red Rock RV.  There is also massive construction going on between Madison Junction and Norris Junction.  So, it took us about an hour and a half to get to the area we were interested in.

Our first stop was the Lower Falls of the Yellowstone River.  That falls is well over 300’ tall.  On the right is the trail down to the falls.  I may try to do this hike at a later date.  It is pretty strenuous (coming back up), and we were not prepared for that today.  Between the altitude, thin air, and “old age,” I can’t just do a hike like that on a whim.  :)

At one of the pull-offs along the North Rim Drive,
100_3269I spotted an Osprey nest atop one of the immensely tall rock spires in the canyon.  If you look closely at the top of the picture, you can make out the large, circular nest with the female Osprey incubating the eggs.

This 24 mile long canyon was carved out, over time, by the Yellowstone River.  The views along the river are awesome!

After finishing all the stops along the North Rim Drive, we stopped for a less than memorable lunch at Canyon Junction.

My mind automatically starts counting when I encounter steps, and one of the stops had 57 steps down and 57 steps up.  We sure got our cardio workout today.  :)

Then we headed back down the road to see the Upper Falls.
100_3296This is a much shorter falls, but the hike to get close to it is a little shorter… only 58 steps down and up.  :(

Perhaps you have noticed that the watermark on all of the photos is PJJ.  The watermark that I use is JB.  That means that I did not take these pictures; my sister, Pam, did.  They are great pictures.  The reason I used her pictures is that my camera failed to work; that’s the bad news (for me).  We all thought it was because my battery needed to be charged, so that’s the first thing I did when we got back to the rigs.  After recharging, I tried to take a photo around the campground but the camera still didn’t work.  It won’t turn on.  :(  I’m devastated!  I’m not sure what to do next.  Do you have any suggestions?  It’s a Canon Digital Rebel XT.  I’ll try troubleshooting it tonight with the owner’s manual.  Maybe the book will have some suggestions.  Ugh!  :-(  Can you imagine being in this area without a working camera?  Boo hoo…..

We have all decided that if you can't get a good picture of an American Bison in Yellowstone, you had better just give up!  :)

Thanks for stopping by….talk to you later,  Judy

  1. I have an XT and sometimes it appears that the battery doesn't make a good connection and I have to reseat it. I suppose someday it will need some kind of wedge in to make the contacts touch.

  2. The pictures are absolutely spectacular. I'm thinking about driving through Grand Tetons and Yellowstone in about mid-September. Do you suppose traffic (and construction) will be lower then? I hope I can see some of it getting there in the early fall and not run into bad weather.

  3. The day we were at Yellowstone's Grand Canyon it was raining hard so we didn't get to do any hikes & took few pictures. Depending on the age of your camera you might need a new camera battery. My Nikons are nearly 4 years old but the batts still take a charge & are OK. Might want to Google your camera make & model & troubleshoot it that way or check your manual to see if there is a troubleshooting section in the back. Got to get that fixed pronto so you can keep the great photos comiing......:))

  4. What a bummer on the camera, hopefully it will be something simple, try switching out the batteries for new ones, I know my rechargeables after awhile need replacing and one of the symptoms is turning it on and the lights come on and then go off right away.Looks like your sisters camera did just fine, we are enjoying the sights you are seeing. Have fun and give Emma a pat for us. Sam & Donna.

  5. Wow.. bummer on the camera not working! At least you have your sister's pics. Perhaps there is a tiny reset button you can hit with a toothpick?

Wonderful shots of a great area!

  6. Judy, I stumbled upon your blog when you headed out for Cody and since you are in one of our most favorite spots in the world, decided to follow you. Now you are in a park that we have stayed in twice~the second time being last summer! It's so fun to hear your opinions on what we have done so many times we've lost count! BTW~did you find a gold hoop earring on the north rim of the canyon? lol Last year the day we went there it was so windy that when I tucked my hair behind my ear, the movement forward of my hand caught the hoop and unfastened it and down into the golden glory it went! We saw the osprey feeding their babies (2) in Sept. 09! And there/were a total of 6 nests in the canyon then. We stayed in the park at fishing bridge RV park for 2 weeks after school started and every evening we went to a little pull off in Hayden Valley to watch a wolf pack. One morning we got up at 4:30 to go hear them howl ~ for about 25 seconds! But it was glorious!!! I hope you have no time constraints and can stay and enjoy YNP as long as you want! And all your friends who are following your blog! As many times as we have been there, we have never spent a disappointing day... rain or shine! And your friend who asked about Sept... in our opinion, that is the best time to come ~ less crowded, buffalo rutt starts and is always good to watch buffers & humans; also elk rutt/ buggling...

Now, I wish we were going there again!!!

They were working on that darn road last year too and towards the end of the tourist season closed it completely.

Another word of advice; a 40 ft. motorhome with 4 slides is too big for fishing bridge RV park~ no matter what they tell you!!!

    HAVE FUN!!!

  7. I forgot to mention (you can reject this post for publication!) try cleaning the connection on both your camera and your battery with a q-tip dipped in rubbing alcohol.

Hope that works... or one of the other suggestions!!!!!
