The weather interfered with my plans

The last two days have been windy and raining, so my plans to head for Louisiana have been stymied.  I’m still sitting in Marion, IL.  I don’t like to drive in high winds, and the continuous rain added to my reluctance to leave.  Other rigs have pulled into and out of the campground, but I’d rather be safe than sorry.  Both Emma and I are going a little stir crazy, but I hope we’ll get a little ways down the road tomorrow.

In plotting my course, I’ve decided to just do a short jaunt tomorrow to Sikeston, MO.  Since the rig can’t be worked on until next week anyway, I won’t kill myself getting there.  Lambert’s Restaurant is located in Sikeston, and is home to the ‘Throwed Rolls’.   There’s a shuttle from the campground to the restaurant, so I thought I’d give that a try.

As I’ve been perusing campgrounds along my route to Scott, LA, I now have a new requirement for where I’ll be staying this trip.  The campground must sell ice.  Although supplies are dwindling in my freezer turned cooler, I still need to keep it cool with bags of ice.  I’ve had to ditch quite a few things in the dumpster since it’s been a week since the fridge last worked. I can only eat so much each day, and most of the meat I had in the freezer has either been eaten or gotten rid of.  So far I’ve been able to keep it at about 39* with two bags of ice/day.

Unlike many people, grocery shopping has always been something I have enjoyed.  So, once the new fridge is installed I’m going to have a good old time restocking it.  Smile  It’s a PITA right now, but I’m trying to keep a positive attitude.

Thanks for stopping by… talk to you later,  Judy

  1. Best to toss it if you aren't sure it is safe to eat!

Craig and I have a funny story about a warm fridge. A few years back when we were driving down to San Diego for the Christmas week, Craig decided to turn the power off to the house to save a bit of electricity. He always turns the furnace off and drains the water to avoid freezing, so this time he decided to add the electric service.

We were about 1/2 hour from home when we started talking about what we had to do on arrival. that is when he told me he had turned off the power. WHAT? That means both the refrigerators were off for six days!

PEW I had a messy bunch of defrosted and unrefrigerated food to toss.

    Not a saving!

Craig usually doesn't do things like that.

  2. Yes Do the throwed rolls. You will not be sorry. Order something that you can take home with you as they give you all these side dishes to eat there. Have a safe trip

  3. Hey, we have spent some time in Sikeston, summer of 2010 and then Jan/Feb this year. Would you believe we never made it to Lambert's? Oh well, some other time. Enjoy!

  5. I'm sorry that you're still stuck in Marion; wish the timing had been different so I could have run around the area with you a bit. You will enjoy the trip to Lamberts, however. We just passed by there on Monday, but it was the wrong time of day to stop. We spent our first night out in Springfield, MO, where it poured rain and turned cold, but we had to stop there to have our vehicle looked at when the engine light came on halfway through MO. It was an easy fix, fortunately, and tonight we are at Enchanted Trails RV Park & Trading Post in Albuquerque, NM, hoping to arrive in Phoenix tomorrow afternoon. Here's hoping things start to look up for you soon, Judy!

  6. I've always kept food in a cooler in my auto travels, dating way back, because I don't like to eat out. It does limit your choices, and you have to shop more often. What a pain!

  7. A couple of my kids and grands have been to Lambert's and they all say it's great. Hope you make it there.

As far as trying to keep a positive attitude...you are one of the most positive people I know. I'd be going nuts about now!

  8. I was in Lamberts in Gulf Shore the first week of the month. It was different and fun. They serve mammoth portions.

Glad you're going to get your fridge replaced.

  10. Lambert's serves WAY TOO MUCH FOOD, so make sure you order something you can take home with you -- throw'd rolls, fried potatoes, blackeyed peas, fried okra -- in addition to what you order! ENJOY!

  11. Like you, I enjoy grocery shopping as well....as long as I am doing the shopping alone. I have zero patience when grocery shopping with someone else!!

  12. Yes... I see others have commented on Lamberts... be very hungry when you go... don't eat anything all day until you get there... lol

I asked to spend the night there a year ago and they said yes. They are a very friendly crowd.

But wow a shuttle... that's really great.

You can fill up on the sides and rolls they keep throwing and bringing around.

  13. Grocery shopping is one of the most therapeutic past times there is. Something about a building filled with food just makes me so happy and safe. Be safe out there.

  16. We had high winds down here also and were under a fire watch. It was so windy two days ago, that it blew my paint tray over on the deck I was painting.

But we are in for a much calmer day today with wonderful temps. The house is at 64 degrees and the outside is at 60.

May you trip have no more troubles.

  17. I like to grocery shop too. When we still owned a 5th wheel our refrig. died during a freak ice storm in San Antonio, Texas. I10 was closed for 5 days, trucks were going nowhere due to the heavy ice and cold temps. I just put all our stuff outside on the table and did lose a little bit. The RV resort had a spare refrig where I could store the frozen stuff. Fast forward a few weeks, the new refrigerator died and we had just made a Costco run and we were in Tucson with temps in the 80's!!! Friends stored some stuff, we went to Lowe's and bought a small upright refrigerator/freezer and put it where the washer/dryer spot was. That's our refrigerator story!

  19. Never been to Lamberts but we've heard a lot about it. Catch us a roll while you are there -- just a little butter, please. Maybe some blackberry jam for good measure.

  20. Dennis and I bought a portable ice maker 2 years ago and it has paid for itself...We use lots of ice, and don't have a residential refig...and bags of ice get costly and sometimes ya gotta drive 1/2 hour to get one...Something to think about.
Den put an extra plug in just inside the basement door outside the RV door and the ice maker sits inside there and just keeps pumping out ice..We travel with it in the back seat of our GMC...just a thought! I gotta find out where Scott, LA is...

  21. Wise move to stay put...we were in Tennessee and decided to come on home since it started raining the night before and we got hit with some strong winds. My poor husband fought it most of the way home. It's kinda scary to be going down the road and all of a sudden be hit with a gust of wind. Makes me want to get a bigger rig cause I've heard the wind doesn't move them around as much. Good luck and safe travels on ur way to LA.

  22. Get together a group to go to Lambert's; it doubles your fun. Do sit at the end of the table, though, so as to have good access to the servers. Their chicken fried steak is so big I get 3-4 meals from it. Their fried potatoes with onions, one of their pass-arounds, is one of my favorite foods. It feels weird but they really do encourage you to take way more food than you can eat so you can take a big box of it home with you. Of course you then need to refrigerate that so plan ahead.
