After wallowing in a good bit of self pity Friday afternoon and Saturday, I was still able to accomplish a few necessary chores. One of the things I do in October is get my yearly flu shot, and since Saturday was Oct.1, I checked that off of my list.
Robyn and Dennis were off for a short holiday in Vegas, without the girls, so I was surprised to run into the grandgirls at Robyn’s house when I arrived to do some much needed laundry. They were spending the weekend with their other grandparents, but were at the house getting ready to go to the park with their local teenage babysitter. Phoebe’s reaction to seeing me was the usual: “Belt!!” Avery, on the other hand was a little more demur. “Oh, hi grandma Bell, where’s Emma the gog?” Guess I know where I stand in her great scheme of things. 
Now, to get to the title of tonight’s post. Those of you who have always had to wear glasses won’t understand my fairly recent chagrin about having to wear glasses for almost every waking moment. I’ve needed reading glasses for quite a few years, but I’ve now advanced to also needing them for not so close vision enhancement. I can still walk around without bumping into things without them, but life is just a little easier with them on. Sometimes, by late afternoon, I’m tired of wearing them, so I take them off for Emma’s evening walk. And here’s what I’ve noticed. After wearing the specs all day, I suddenly feel a lot taller walking down the lane. It’s quite an amazing feeling. Has anyone else had this phenomena happen to them? Why I’m sure if someone were to come by and measure me at those times, I’d be a statuesque 5’4” tall for sure!

Right there with ya...I hate my progressive bifocals for walking..makes me dizzy. I much prefer to walk without them...And..any way I can get taller, I'm all for it...I HATE my glasses..and I used to work for an Optometrist!..Dennis has worn hard contact lenses since he was 26..that would be 43 years..Now they are bifocal contact lenses...NO WAY, JOSE!!

ReplyDeleteSince I was eight years old, I have needed glasses for everything except sleeping, so I have not experienced the "taller" phenomenon. I do wish some magic glasses would make me thinner, though!

ReplyDeleteI wore no-line bifocals for years, and then contact lenses (which I loved). Now I hate having to wear glasses for reading, but that probably won't ever change. Wish I could go back to contacts, but I got so I couldn't get them out very easily.
You are very statuesque, glasses or no glasses (yours or mine).
Can't remember not wearing glasses but I do remember when I first got bifocals about two years ago. I hated them. Still do.
ReplyDeleteI'll go with the thinner comments (I wish)! I can tell you that bifocals definitely make steps and curbs look taller ...or shorter... or anything that they are NOT. Big pain in the patootie!
ReplyDeletewhat ever works for you Judy!..I have been wearing glasses since grade 5...now I have progressive lenses..but sometimes I find it easier to read without them..time for a new pair I think!!

ReplyDeleteHad to start wearning glasses around age 45 and have hated having to wear glasses every single day since!! Went the contact lens route for awhile but found it too aggravating and didn't like the idea of having to poke myself in the eye every morning.

ReplyDeleteI have just the opposite opinion of progressive bifocals, walking or not. I think they are the best thing since sliced bread and pockets on shirts.
The 'makes me dizzy' part of the comment makes me think that the prescription is not correct.
I like the way glasses make me look so I don't mind needing them but when I first got bifocals they made me dizzy. So I took Dramamine until I got used to them. That worked for me.

ReplyDeleteSpeaking of glasses; I had an eye exam several weeks ago, dilation,etc.. On the way home(200 miles) a truck came over a hill WITH THE BRIGHTEST LIGHTS EVER, and caused a pain near my ear!!! They had prescribed a light tint for my new glasses , for night driving; when the glasses came they made all of the difference in the world; at night.. I see farther, sharper &
clearer than ever!!!
