This afternoon Emma and I set off to discover what there was to see in the area around the Isaac Creek COE campground. The host couple at the gate assured me that there was nothing to see.
Before we headed down the road, I stopped to view the other side of the dam along the Alabama River. It’s getting hot down here in the south with temps nearing 90* today.
After driving around for about 20 miles, we did come upon the Haines Island Park. It was down a road that eventually became unpaved. The dirt roads down here are a bright orange/red. That’s interesting.
There was a nice view from the top of the ridge by one of the picnic tables and playground. We then headed down a steep curvy red road toward the river.
I found the campsites which are obviously for tenters along the Alabama River. They were very secluded with lovely views of the river. There was no water or bathrooms, so it is most rustic. It was also empty of any campers.
At the boat launch there was also a ferry across the river. No one was around and there were no signs, so I’m not sure when it is in operation. A neighbor at the campground later told me that on the other side is a very isolated community. This is truly the back country of Alabama.
Other than this hardly used park, that was all we could find in the area. I’m beginning to believe the hosts are correct! I thought I could at least visit the Alabama River Heritage Museum, but the hosts said it has only been open one day so far this year. I guess there aren’t enough volunteers to man it.
Oh well, I guess I’ll just spend this week relaxing and reading…
Thanks for stopping by… talk to you later, Judy
Hmmmm, very interesting ferry. Don't think your motorhome will fit.
ReplyDeleteNobody and nothing to do sounds like heaven to me at this moment!
ReplyDeleteSeems pretty typical of the South in hot weather..No one wants to do much outdoor stuff..and I can't say as I blame them.
ReplyDeleteOH WELL, a little peace, quiet and relaxation is good for the soul!
ReplyDeleteI could use a nice hot day in the sun!
ReplyDeleteTent camping but no water or restrooms? I wouldn't be there, either, even in our tent camping days. We did go backpacking where we had to bring our own water or purification tablets but at least there were pit toilets. :)
ReplyDeleteI bet it isn't easy for you to relax. You sound like a person who needs to be on the go. Sometimes there just isn't any thing to do or see. bummer.
ReplyDeleteMade a crossing on a ferry like that years ago, albeit with a Honda CRX and not a Class A. Seems to me you saw what there was to see and it was actually kinda nice.
ReplyDeleteMay not have been much to see, but it sure looked pretty. After being on the go most of April, I could use a quiet week, but work isn't going to allow that apparently.
ReplyDeleteLooks like there should be some birds to see anyway. I don't think I would have used that ferry.
ReplyDeleteIt sure looks like a good place to relax.
ReplyDeleteyou didn't hear any banjo's did you?
ReplyDeleteokay... so go relax!!
Secluded means that is where the Moonshine is made.
ReplyDeleteNothing to do or see? I thought you'd take up that challenge and get into trouble... ;c)
ReplyDeleteSure beats cutting the grass in my yard in cool weather!!
ReplyDeleteFor a place with nothing to see you sure can take some awesome pictures of nothing. Nothing wrong with relaxing for a week.
ReplyDeleteSometimes places with little to do can be good:) Of course, if they had another experienced volunteer at the museum, there would be more to do:)
ReplyDeleteHowdy Judy & Emma,
ReplyDeleteJudy, there is secluded and then there is Aladamnbama 'SECLUDED'!!! Don't think you ought to got any further into the swamp, down there.. You may find some 'birds' you can't take pics of or identify!!! Be watchful and careful!!
It's still nice to get out & discover your surroundings.
ReplyDeleteHope you had Emma with you! She could at least bark at the moonshiners...
