After four days of 110-130 fifth grade students, we are finished! Wahoo! It was quite a week. No one got hurt, and it appeared that all students had a good time. I’m pooped! My only complaint is that several of the teachers deserted their students upon arrival at my station to sit at a distant picnic table to chit chat. In my day, the teachers would have stayed with their students to offer support with those few students that were undermining the learning process. I’m not a novice with dealing with challenging kids, but with a short time table, I sure appreciated those teachers that hung in there.
(All pics tonight are from my visit to Ocean City State Park, Washington, when I stayed there in October, 2006. Just haven’t had time for photos this week.)
It seems with only five hours left, a partial government shutdown is in the offing. I’ve decided to stay here and wait it out. These things usually only last two weeks, and I’d be happy to have a two week vacation at the height of migration season in Mississippi!
I have several errands to run tomorrow, but I’m thinking maybe I’ll take a little float down the bayou before I head to town. The best part is that I don’t have to set my alarm for tomorrow morning.
There is a ferry trip I’d like to make to Ship Island, and it doesn’t run at this time of the year on Monday or Tuesday, my normal days off. So, a shutdown would allow me to do that during the week. I really try to avoid doing those kinds of things on the weekend if I can, because of the crowds.
I’m still doing battle with the elusive mouse. I’m not giving up yet. I think I’m going to try making my own shrimp po-boy tonight. I do love shrimp!
Thanks for stopping by…. talk to you later, Judy
Oh man, I'm praying for shutdown so you can get to Ship Island. I haven't made it yet but a friend went years ago at this time and found a jewel on every bush. A huge flock of hummers were there. Take lots of pictures.
ReplyDeleteWe hauled the trees home (volunteer home) as well as Patrick's baby wildflowers. That way, I'll be able to water them. And Steve, a new volunteer and I hauled water half the morning, then I hauled all afternoon. Then we treated ourselves to a visit to the High Island Rookery.
I am sure you will outsmart that pesky mouse :)
ReplyDeleteAs long as the mouse doesn't invite any friends in, I'm sure you will win the contest.
ReplyDeleteSounds like a very busy week! I taught for 35 ears Early Childhood and i know about field trip support by teachers.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your weekend and Chillax!
A couple days off sounds like a good plan! Enjoy.
ReplyDeleteSounds like the possible government shutdown will provide you with some good time to do more sightseeing. I liked your pictures taken at Washington's Ocean City State Park. We've been there a couple of times--both in the winter, not the best time to be there.
ReplyDeleteNo shutdown, Judy. As expected, an agreement was reached just a few minutes ago and all is well again!
ReplyDeleteJudy you are a brave lady to deal with all those children. You certainly deserve a day off and a lazy float down the bayou.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed your photos tonight. Great photo of the slug. Did you know in Eugene,OR a Slug Queen is selected each October as part of the Eugene Celebration? "Only in Eugene"
you do deserve a day off!..love the photos today!!
ReplyDeleteSorry you won't get a vacation. After this last week you really deserve one. Enjoy your float.
ReplyDeleteAnd here I always thought TGIF meant, The Goose Is Flying:))
ReplyDeleteThose electonic devices you plug into your wall outlet do work on mice. Every year for decades I had mice that wanted to spend the winter in my house. I was constantly setting traps. Two years ago I tried one of those electronic things and no mice for the last two winters. The best $10.00 I ever spent.
ReplyDeleteTake care, thanks.
Glad to see you survived the kid invasion, Maybe a handout telling teachers they are required to stay with their charges would help, that seems unfair to load someone with not only a being a guide , but the disciplinarian as well. Be safe out there. Sam & Donna..
ReplyDeleteNo vacation for you I'm afraid ... DH would have appreciated a one-day furlough on Monday so he wouldn't have to drive 3-hours each way to make a 1-hour presentation :-) ... better to have a paycheck, so he'll just have to bite the bullet and go.
ReplyDeleteMaybe one of the other volunteers would switch a day with you so you can take your trip on the day you would like. Just sayin..
ReplyDeleteI thought TGIF was Toes Go In First? Switch days with someone or stay one more day at the end of your volunteer time. Let's hope the ferry isn't a federal boat--it may stop out in the harbor and have to wait for the govt to start up again. Course, you are a synchronized swimmer; I can see you gathering the dolphins together in a routine.
ReplyDeleteJudy, have you tried the open box of Bounce in your storage areas and cabinets inside? It is suppose to deter mice! I have a box on each side of our basement, so they don't get into the bird seed!
ReplyDeleteI hope you get a little trip to Ship Island any way!
Well, shut down averted. We were glad because the ranger came by and said if it occurred he would be here early to help us all move out so he could lock the gate. Now we get to stay until Monday.
ReplyDeletePretty nervy of those teachers to just let you herd them kids...Our daughter is a teacher, and she says 5th graders are an awkward age at best...No rest for the wicked...no government shutdown...Now if the "wicked" Congress would get their act together, we could ALL rest easy!!
