Yesterday was Denny’s and Fonda’s last day of work at the refuge. In celebration of their three month volunteer commitment, volunteer coordinator, Doug and his wife, invited us to their house for a scrumptious Mississippi dinner. Denny and Fonda had requested something that typified the Mississippi coast area.
That’s Denny on the left, and Doug on the right in front of one of the many huge azalea bushes that surround Doug’s house. Isn’t it interesting how men pose for a picture? Notice their similarly crossed arms. So much for posed pictures.
They have 10 varieties of azaleas on their property. The rainstorm on Wednesday created that blossom drift under one of the bushes. Isn’t that a lot better than a snow drift? Bottle bushes/trees seem to be popular down south. Don’t know the significance of that custom.
What a feast we had! Fresh gulf shrimp, blue crab claws, and crawdads. That’s a blue crab cake baked in a ramekin on the middle right. Fresh Louisiana strawberries, French bread, salad, and butter or cocktail sauce. I’m not a big foodie, but this was a meal to die for.
A good time was had by all, and it was a fitting send off for Denny and Fonda. I’ve never had blue crab claws before or a crab cake baked in a ramekin. Seafood rules here along the coast!
I worked the Visitor’s Center today, and will do the same tomorrow. Looks like I’ll have a week or so that Emma and I will be the only volunteers here in the camp area. Wild and crazy times ahead??
Thanks for stopping by…. talk to you later, Judy
I have never seen azaleas that big! Amazing, not to mention gorgeous. Love all the different blossoms.
ReplyDeleteThat dinner is certainly something to remember. WOW! They really know how to put on a feast.
Try not to work too hard while you are the only volunteer.
Those azaleas are so beautiful! I wish we could grow them up here. It would brighten up a dreary spring.
ReplyDeleteMy Goodness, the flowers are wonderful, and that food, you guys sure have a good time!!!
ReplyDeleteStill not a seafood person. But I bet for somebody who likes seafood it would be wonderful. Hopefully Emma will be good company while you guys are IT.
ReplyDeleteThat food does look good. What do crawdads taste like?
ReplyDeleteThe one thing I know about the bottle brush (other than that it's pretty) is that it attracts bees. Most of the freeway medians here in CA alternate oleander with bottle brush, and it's a gorgeous sight for miles down the highway.
Those azaleas are BEAUTIFUL...glad all the rain didn't totally destroy them. Yummy on the food -- what do crawdads taste like...inquiring minds want to know:)
ReplyDeleteWhat an incredible spread of food...I know all enjoyed. I know you will miss Denny & Fonda but your time together was good.
ReplyDeleteLoved the azaleas, they are about at peak for the season.
Take care and be safe!
Bottle brush was new to me when I moved to California.
ReplyDeleteLove those azaleas! Wow!
If you are referring to the metal "trees" holding empty wine bottles, I didn't realize that it was a Southern thing. However, I think they are an interesting piece of yard art and a nice way to reuse the bottles.
ReplyDeleteIf you are referring to bottle brush bushes - never mind!
what a feast!!!..looks delicious!!...love seafood!!..have a great weekend Judy!!
ReplyDeleteLike Jim & Sandy I am not a seafood person either so quickly skipped those pics but did like those flower pics for sure. Like Sandra said, I wished we could grow Azaleas up here in Canada like that. It will be another month before we begin having nice colors in our flowerbeds.
ReplyDeleteWe saw some of the bottle brush/bushes in Louisiana, but didn't ask what they were all about. Seems to be blue and green are the colors used on them. Nice looking meal you had there.
ReplyDeleteI was drueling over the food pics...Seafood at it's best...A neat aquarium behing the table that reminded me of one we had growing up...It's sad to see friends leave, by another opportunity for new friendships is just down the Interstate...eh??
ReplyDeleteFantastic looking dinner! Seafood is one of our favourites. Beautiful flower pics too.
ReplyDeleteThose azaleas are amazing. We have see a few blooms here is Texas, can't wait to see more.
ReplyDeleteLooks like quite a last supper! I will have to be careful of my pose the next time someone wants to take my picture, of course, this does not happen very often.
ReplyDeleteI want a bottle tree so badly! But I guess I'll have to stay at home to get one!
ReplyDeleteThose pictures of food are just torture! I love seafood ~ wish you did too so that you could have enjoyed it more!
Seems like a great feast and a very nice send off for your fellow-volunteers.
