Upgrade update

I stayed at home today so I could supervise (:)) the young guys working on my rig.  The new fridge was delivered late this morning, so Cory, the tech I’ve been working with and son of the owner, started getting things ready for the switch.

If you are at all familiar with how motorhomes are constructed, you might wonder how that switch was going to be accomplished.  Neither the old or the new fridge was going to fit through the door.  Cory felt they would have to take out a set of windows in order to get things done.  I can tell you that I was not crazy about that idea.

IMG_8643The first step was to take the doors off of the new fridge.  Then, after measuring my large window above the dinette booth…

They just pushed it in through the open window!

They were happy with how slick it went, and so was I!  :)

IMG_8653Then Cory put the doors back on, plugged it in, and it started cooling down in the middle of my living area.  While we waited for it to cool some, Cory began the process of getting the old fridge ready to be removed.  It only took about an hour before we could transfer the food from the old to the new.  :)  Notice that this model has the bottom freezer.  Wahoo!

IMG_8654This big hole is what was left after the old fridge was removed.  They had a bit more difficulty getting that heavy thing out, but all went well.

By this time, it was nearing closing time, so they put the outside vent back on and headed out the door.  This also happened to be the time that a strong cold front with rain and whistling northerly winds moved through.  That wind was howling through the outside vent into the rig, so I taped some plastic wrap over the vent and then covered that with a heavy towel.  Duck tape to the rescue once again!  It’s supposed to get down to 30* tonight, so I didn’t want that kind of breeze chilling me out.

Tomorrow, the new fridge will go into place.  I’m already loving this new appliance even if it is hording my living room space for a night.  :)  And I’ll sleep better knowing my rig won’t catch on fire.

Thanks for stopping by…. talk to you later,  Judy

  1. That rather odd shaped obelisk looking thing standing quietly statuesque & albeit coldly in the middle of your living room looks like something Alien has transported & manifested itself to Judy & Emma's world. Beware, the ice may soon be upon you as you sleep........:))

  3. Thanks for pictures of frig swap out. Did they renegade sub floor and what will you do when not connected to shore power. Is your current invertor batteries capable of handling when not on shore power.

  4. Here in Quartzsite, a topic of much conversation has been the RV refrigerator fires and endless recalls. Many folks are talking about switching to an energy efficient household refrigerator. You are on the cutting edge. Very interesting to see how the new installation is done!

  5. Is this, by chance, a frost-free freezer? If so, I would love to have that it my motorhome! Defrosting is for the birds.

  6. Looks great. I agree that frost free has to be a big improvement.

I thought all appliances had to be special for motor homes!

    This is good news.

  7. Wow, I am so impressed with your new fridge! Makes ours look like a small snack chest! Oh well, ours does the job for us. :) What really amazes me these days are the things one can put in an RV - a fridge like that, washer and dryer, dishwasher - a far cry from what I remember as a kid in our trailers. Enjoy bottom freezer; had one in the stix-n-brix and really liked it.

  11. What a process! just love it tho, when the right person for the job is there and can get it done with minimum hassle when it seems to be impossible to begin with.

  12. That is one gorgeous refrigerator, and to think it is in a motorhome. Never thought I'd see anything like it in an RV!

  14. Whew what a process and great that they let you take pics as they brought it in!

Hope the draw is low enough to just work on your inverter when driving, so you don't have to keep the generator running too while travelling down the road?

  16. Beautiful frig! I think the inverter is usually upgraded at the same time the residential refrig is installed - right or wrong? Any concern over additional weight? Curious minds want to know.

  17. Thanks for the post, I always wondered how they got those big things inside...never thought about the window. Very nice refrigerator, I would like the frezer section on the bottom as well. Enjoy!!!

  19. Two questions:

Where did you live in Shady Hill?

I hope you will tell us more about the fridge. Like did you have to add a battery or get a new inverter/charger?

  20. That new fridge is gorgeous...I HATE our top freezer in ours..since I am vertically challenged and have to use my stool constantly. I should just get some scaffolding in our RV kitchen and leave it up...I'll bet you can't wait to fill that thing up....Does it have a wine chilling drawer?...just wonderin'..

  21. Wow what great pictures! Keep them coming. I always wondered what it would look like to get a residential refrigerator into a rig ~ now I know!

  22. We will be here 2 more weeks so we should try to get together when you get to Mississippi Sandhill Crane NWR. We don't know very much at all about NWR and camping so we could learn a lot from you.
