I’ve been feeling pretty lazy

I haven’t posted in a week, and I spent the last three days off just taking care of personal business and chilling out.  Not very exciting.  The big news in Medford, OR, (that’s where my local channels come from) is the opening of the first In-and-Out Burger joint.  I’ve never been to one, and I don’t eat out much, so all the excitement is beyond me.

We did have an interesting visitor to the refuge from the Netherlands last weekend.  She came in and insisted that she be given a private canoe tour by a refuge ranger.  Really?  She had missed the scheduled canoe paddle the day before.  Her response was, “But I’m here today, and want a tour!”  She wanted the VC to be shut down so her wish could be granted.

That didn’t happen, but she called again the next day, and believe it or not, was given a private tour with the refuge providing the canoe and transportation.  I haven’t even been offered one of those tours.

She was staying at a rather ritzy ranch up in Oregon, and I suspect she thought private tours were expected as a service at the ranch.  She just didn’t seem to get the idea of a National Wildlife Refuge.  She seemed a bit disappointed in the tour, and put not one penny in the donation box for her excursion.  Go figure.

The temps dipped down last week, and I think every fly in the county was trying (and succeeding) to find a way into my rig.  I just about wore out my flyswatter!  Temps have risen again, so I’m having a bit of a reprieve this week.

I read a post by Kevin and Ruth today about photos that folks include in their blogs.  He likes to click on photos for a closer look, and sometimes that doesn’t happen.  I’ve always thought that if you click on one of my photos, you get a larger version, but I really don’t know for sure.  Can one of you let me know if that’s what happens if you click on one?

Last night I decided to update the maps on my Garmin GPS.  Little did I know that I would have some problems.  I updated about a year and a half ago, and things went just fine.  Not last night.  First of all, I had to buy this latest update.  I thought I had a unit with free updates, but apparently not.  Then there were problems with the download.  I had to restart it three times before it finally took with the result of it using over 3 GBs of my limited data.  That meant I had gone over my limit for the month and had to purchase more GBs so I could make it until the 13th of the month.  Uf-dah!  Turned out to be a rather expensive evening.

I’ll be working on two new projects tomorrow.  I’ll let you know how that goes.  Then on Thursday I have a dentist appointment. Sad smile It’s not my favorite thing, but another chunk of a filling has fallen out.  I always dread going to the dentist.  Reminds me of the torture I went through as a kid…

                                                                               THE END!!

Thanks for stopping by… talk to you later,  Judy

  1. Yes they have always enlarged. I did notice some blogs don't.

Some people think they world owes them what ever they demand and they don't think they need to donate a thing for anything. Takes all kinds I guess

  2. I always have problems updating my Garmin. I bought lifetime updates and come to find out they consider lifetime to be 3 updates. I have an older model and the last time it didn't have enough room so I had to pick one part of the US or put the update on a memory card. As much as the Garmin aggravates me I like it better than the TomTom my son gave me. I can't figure out how to do some things with the TomTom.

  3. Your pictures get larger but Kevins are huge and take up the whole screen I wonder what he does different?
I had a group one time that wanted a Private Tour with Coffee and Cookies and they put $2 in the donation box. Some people are just entitled I guess:(

  4. I clicked and the photo enlargerd. In-'n-Out is not bad, not that I've eaten it in years. But I think they are definitely a cut above the other burger chains, and their fries are good. Don't expect it to be quick though, as it seems to take a much longer time than usual, but maybe they cook to order and not lined up in advance as McDonald's does.

  5. I live in Washington where you need a Discover Pass (annual or day pass) for the state parks and fish & wildlife areas. We stopped by a park a week or so ago and there was a sign stating that a Discover Pass was required. We hadn't bought one for the year so I went in the VC to pay for the day pass. The woman looked at me in shock and said I was the first person in ages to actually voluntarily pay! She said she usually has to hunt down the people and get them to pay for the pass. I really don't know what is wrong with people anymore. So many want everything for free and have no manners. Yours is another blog I love in addition to Kevin and Ruth's (I found you through them :) Your font is big enough for my aging eyes to see without my nose pressed up to the computer screen, the background color is easy on the eyes and your pictures are outstanding. Love your blog, too. Always interesting & often humorous without being long-winded. A big thank you for sharing your adventures. I wish I was out there doing the same thing, but will have to be content to read about everyone's travels for now.

  6. I found a bug-Zapper @ Walmart for $7.00..Works really swell and I love the sound of the "POP" when it gets those quackers...

  7. Tipping is more part of the US culture than the European culture. She might have viewed the donation request as a tip and thus not left one ... then again she might have just felt entitled.

  8. I was wondering where you were. Should have known you'd be out taking these great bird photos. LOL at your little news station. We had one like that when we lived in the Stix n' Brix. they were often hard pressed for "news". I always wondered why they didn't just send someone out or more than one to find all the wonderful things people were doing in our town. Seems like it all has to be bad news to be news worthy. In comparison to that In and Out (which I've never heard of) sounds pretty newsworthy actually. First time I've heard of a foreigner with entitlement issues. That's usually we Americans.

  9. We often gave private tours at Aroostook NWR but know that most places don't have the time nor personnel to do this. Like you, we didn't accept tips, but suggested they could place a donation in The Friends donation box.

  10. We have a Tom-Tom GPS and when it's time to download a new map I go to the local library with my laptop and use their internet. It's much faster than our MIFI in the motor home and also saves my bandwidth for other uses. Of course if you are out in the boondocks, then that might not be a good option for you. I have the problem with the lifetime downloads on one GPS since the new maps take more space than what is available on the GPS.

We ran into many foreigners with entitlement issues when we lived overseas for many years. Costa Ricans (Ticos) seemed to be the worst and would always try to jump to the first of the line whenever they could.

  11. Some people think it is all about them. Go figure

    I never knew there was such a thing as a Yellow-headed Blackbird....beautiful

    Pictures enlarge super. Good job!

  12. Off to the dentist you go, maybe this time you will get that tooth fixed! :))))) I've got the doldrums too--don't want to do anything, no quilting, no cleaning, nothing--what's up with that??

  13. Judith, what focal length lens do you use on your camera to take the close ups?

  14. Same thing happened when we last updated!!! Good luck with that tooth.

  15. I can't believe that she would get her own private tour. That isn't fair! The thing I like about In and Out Burger is the menu is short. You either want a single or double burger. Fries are fresh cut are optional. That's about it.

  16. I don't know how many times I said what wonderful pictures you take. And the great shots you get, but I still enjoy each and everyone. Keep doing what you do. Its wonderful.

  18. In our part of the woods we would say that woman "had the gall", and she called back the second time. Unbelievable.

  19. You can see the individual picture - but it is the same size. I can definitely see that you need to start calling yourself Norwegian. :) And I see you still have yellow-headed blackbirds. Ours built up to a group of over 100 birds, then almost all of them left. A few days later, even the stragglers were gone. Even my yard birds are almost gone.

  20. So, it's not just some in this country that have that entitlement gene. Good to know. I guess.

  21. I have Lifetime Maps but I have to update at least once a year to keep my eligibility. (It says that in my fine print.) Perhaps the problem is you waited a year and a half to update.

  22. I would not consider not posting lazy:) I like to think I am waiting for inspiration!

  23. I totally get it when you get lazy about blogging..I have been stretching my posts out to almost 2 weeks lately. I guess my mundane life lately isn't terribly note worthy...As for the dentist...We have no dental insurance to there ARE no visits to the dentist for us...OK by me, but I'm pretty sure my teeth are not happy about it.

  24. Good to hear from you, Judy. Geez...Entitled much? I have noticed that same sort of attitude sometimes in the national parks from some visitors. Kind of a bummer. Glad you got a dentist appointment. I haven't updated ever on my Garmin GPS for that very reason. I refuse to spend hard earned gigabytes on that stuff, and just use the phone to compare with the paper maps and the GPS. When we get to the apartment with free gigs, maybe I'll get around to updating. We had hoped to come down to the fair this weekend, but Nickie and Jimmy are arriving tomorrow so we have to wait on Grants Pass till the weekend so I guess we will miss it this year. Bummer. Hope you get to go and come up with some good stories! Hugs to you and Emma.

  25. If you like burgers you have to try In-n-Out. Get a double double animal style.

  26. Whoever agreed to give her a tour probably learned from this. There should have been a fee charged and placed in the donation box of at least a few bucks. I love the yellow headed blackbird...have never seen such a thing! How beautiful! I always hate updating anything. It never goes well for me. Just doesn't. I'm always afraid I'll mess up what I have and then end up with nothing. I will go YEARS without updating anything. Husband just rolls his eyes.

  27. Jimmy and I were thinking of heading down to Tule NWR to DEMAND a personalized canoe tour of the area. (haha, just kidding) We spent roughly four hours paddling Recreation Creek today with Sue and Mo and are slap worn out now (like 8 miles)! Been over a year since we've been in kayaks. We're heading home tomorrow, despite the heat and (cough cough) smoke, but aren't looking forward to it. Next week should be cooler, we hope! When are you leaving Tule?

  28. In-n-Our burgers live up to their name. Tried one once and in no time was running to find a rest room. ;c)

  29. Like Erin I'll give the foreigner the benefit of the doubt and hope that a cultural issue. Perhaps in their country things are done differently or she misunderstands the NWR system and our public land philosophy in general. Or she could be a you-know-what, we'll never know for sure! Just catching up on a month's worth of your posts and I've been loving all the birds and the coyote too.
