A short trip to West Memphis

It was only about a 140 mile drive to Tom Sawyer RV Park in West Memphis today, and I appreciated the shorter drive time.  I was closing in on 700 miles the last three days, and was getting a little road weary.

This campground, as many of you know, is located right on the banks of the Mighty Mississippi River.  The cold front has extended this far south and the breeze was brisk, but it was nice to have beautiful blue skies.  I was ready for a break and will stay here two nights.

After getting set up, Emma and I enjoyed a walk along the river.  The road into the campground over the dike is a little interesting, but once you descend to the campground it’s pleasant.  Full hook-ups with the Escapees discount is $32/night.  It’s a much nicer place to stay than I had two nights ago for about the same price.  I’m parked next to the shower/laundry facilities.  Doing your laundry is included in the price, so it’s been quite busy.  I think I’ll try to get a couple of loads done in the early morning tomorrow.

Most folks stop here to enjoy the barge travel that goes on just outside your rig.  This is one of the smaller barges that are being pushed up the river.  The traffic flows both directions, and I must say it’s more relaxing than listening to trains, and all their noise, going by.  Of course, I’m not a big fan of trains, so this is more to my liking.  The forecast for tomorrow calls for a sunny day, so I’m just going to kick back and sit on one of the many benches along the river.

Had to chuckle this afternoon, as I watched all of the men in the campground out washing their rigs.  Apparently you are allowed to do that here.  Don’t know what all the ladies were doing inside, but for me the last thing on my mind is washing the rig.  Considering the miles I have left to go, I’ll choose to wait until I get to Bayou Cocodrie before I consider washing things.  Lots of folks from Ohio here tonight, and it made me wonder if Ohioans always want their rigs sparkling clean?  Or is it a way the men stay busy and get away from the ladies inside?  They were all like little worker bees.  Sure did make me wonder.

                                                                              THE END!!

Thanks for stopping by… talk to you later,  Judy

  1. I love watching barges on the river - any river - so I'd be sitting on the bench all day long! But I like to see trains go by as well. Enjoy your brief rest before pushing on south.

  2. I think the washing is a way to get away from the inside and busy work.... altho they did it at Navarre, Fl to get the sea salt off, but I thought why bother? geez, just going to get on again tomorrow... is that me being lazy... more than likely :)

  3. That washing the rig is just a guy thing..It's a good thing they like to do that or they'd drive us more crazy than they do already! Love the barges...My other favorite place to see barges is on the St. Mary's River up in Michigan...I'm with you on the barges rather than the trains!

  4. We just left Tom Sawyer park. Loved spending the evening on the river bank with a book watching the barges go past. But the benches are all plastic. They get really cold and your butt slips off of them. You should take your own chair out and set it on one of the concrete slabs out there. Trust me on this. A blanket is nice too.

  5. I've made a note to check out that RV park when I get there on my eastward journey. After getting my poor little Smart car 'beached' on the shores of Lake Powell this week, I'll hesitate if there's any 'issue' with getting in there. But, it does sound relaxing and fun to watch the barges go by. Enjoy your little respite. mary-pat

  8. A dirty rig is an unhappy rig, unless you're using the dirt as camouflage to hide from Murphy...

  11. We loved that campground- free laundry. We had friend pull in there at night and she thought she was lost and it was a graveyard :).

  13. Free laundry, never seen that before. But my Ohio father washed his car every Saturday so maybe it is an Ohio male affliction. Women do laundry, men wash cars?? ;-)

  14. We were there in August. Did you walk any trails? There is a naked lady cut out on one of them. I was shocked! LOL

  15. We are from Ohio, and yes, Ohioans are always washing their rigs/cars, etc. Paul is always using the solution on our truck or 5er.

Looks like an awesome place to spend a few days resting and relaxing. I am sure Emma appreciates the break.

  17. Smart ladies, I'd say...With the Cave Dwellers, I'm the one washing the rig, and Dennis is the one inside..(He does a nice job washing the windows, though.) I love the history of that Mississippi..There is a great corps site in Thomson IL along the river that we stay at when we get a chance...Also a state park in Marseilles, IL on the river..Love to watch those barges lock through..

  18. I guess since you can't wash rigs in many campgrounds, they were taking advantage of the opportunity. I find you get too much road dirt on the rig, so we prefer to wait until we get settled. Since we use The Solution, we can "wash" anywhere we choose.

  19. Model railroading was my hobby for many years but even I don't like train whistles when I'm trying to sleep. Glad to see you taking time to catch up with yourself.

  20. What a great spot - I'd love to sit there and watch all the barges go by. As for all the guys washing their rigs, I think it's just a case of "monkey see, monkey do". As soon as 1 guy starts everyone else follows!

  21. maybe the women push the guys outside so they can have some time to their selves. We watched those barges just a few short weeks ago.

  22. Maybe they are headed north and it will get too cold to wash the RV? It may or may not be a Man thing too. You are making your way south..It was cold here today...and no sun:(

  25. I really enjoyed my stay at Tom Sawyer. I was the first one to use the new laundry. Had great weather while there. The day I left they were flooded. Thanks for the memories.
