First tomato

It’s been kind of chilly since I returned to Tamarac.  Highs in the 60’s during the day, and I’ve used the furnace each morning.  There have been rather brisk winds as well.  Some storms moved through the day after I got back, which afforded me another chance to exercise the generator as we lost electricity for a number of hours.

This morning dawned bright but cool, so I headed out for the farmer’s market in Detroit Lakes.

Most of the local venders had to hang onto their canopies so they wouldn’t blow away.  Just about everyone was bundled up.  Seems a little early for such cool temperatures.  I got in line to wait for my rustic Italian loaf of bread from the Breadsmith booth.  I think it’s the most popular booth here.

I got there pretty early, so I was able to snatch up a small basket of home grown tomatoes.  They were pretty small, but so delicious.  I’ve been waiting a year for that wonderful taste.  Raspberries are now in season, but I had bought a pint at a stand on my way back from Rochester the other day.  I got them for a much better price too.

After a few other errands in town, I headed to Frazee, MN, for Turkey Days.  That’s the town where I got that picture of the World’s Largest Turkey in May.  Well, as far as small town festivals go, I’d say this one wasn’t worth stopping for, so I didn’t.  Thumbs down  As I slowly drove through town, it seemed that it mostly consisted of craft booths.  Not my cup of tea, so I headed back home.

I took the round about way home through the refuge, and spotted a nice bunch of wildflowers.   I haven’t got the desire to identify them right now since it took me hours to figure out how to get my pictures uploaded to Picasa 3.  I said in the last post that I was liking Windows 8, but today’s experience almost had me tearing my hair out.

At one point, all 19,000 of my pictures disappeared again, and I ended up calling Daniel several times.  Of course, he told me it had to be user error (which didn’t help my disposition at all!).  Eventually we (he) figured it out, and my pictures were back.  The last time I called, he told me I had reached my limit of help calls for the day.  Disappointed smile  I then reminded him, that if it weren’t for me, he wouldn’t be here!  Nyah-Nyah  I just hope I can remember the convoluted method he showed me for getting pictures uploaded tomorrow.

If the weather is good in the morning, my plan is to visit a couple of interesting places in Little Falls, MN.  Think Charles Lindberg, fishing, and a crane meadow….

Thanks for stopping by… talk to you later,  Judy

  1. Why is it that software developers make the stuff harder and harder for us seniors to use?

  2. It's been cool here in NE Nebr. too. We'll need hotter weather than this to get some decent tomatoes, sweet corn and peppers. I've been picking a few chokecherries at a time, hoping to get enough together to make a couple batches of jelly. Ordered a box of peaches through my son-in-law's Lions Club today...my mouth is watering already.

I've watched a couple videos on Windows 8 [nobody seems to want to by me a new laptop w/Windows 8] and it looks like most of what was in Windows 7 is there. The problem is that it's been moved around and in some cases renamed. I have a perfectly good laptop running Windows 7 so by the time I'm ready for a new one they'll have moved on to Windows 9 or 10 or whatever. :)

  3. I would not a few days of temps at least down in the low 70's. Had some organic tomatoes today grown at the school where are daughter teaches. They are just like I remember from the farm and free to boot:)

  4. Yum...fresh tomatoes. Nothing better to me than a tomato sandwich in the summer. We enjoyed the farmers market in Polson yesterday.

  5. You know Judy there seems to be Utube videos about everything, if you have good internet, maybe you can find one about Windows 8 and Picasa. It's worth a try. Becki

  6. Before you know it, loading your pictures will be old hat. I hate to change too! It would be great if there were better step by step instructions for us! You can do it. You are a smart .... gal.

  7. I don't find loading pics to be one of the difficult things with Windows 8. So many other things were worse for me. Have you tried loading them directly by connecting a USB cable from laptop to camera?

I just bought a good magazine on Win 8 at Sam's club. Hoping it will help me.

  8. We can't really find much produce down here-too hot. In February and March, we will get some local Tomatoes :)

  9. It's cold here too. I'm wearing a shirt and shorts in preparation for a run/walk in a few minutes. But I'm wearing a sweatshirt over it to take the dog out. It's 53....at 7 a.m. What happened to summer? Hope the Windows 8 comes along better...I don't even know what Windows I'm on right now, but I didn't like it at first. Don't think it's 8 though....guess I'll have to learn that one when the time comes. I must be old. I like things to stay the same!

  11. I think your purple flowers are Prairie Clover if my memory serves me right. We had those in Oklahoma and they are pretty.

  13. It is hotter than hades in Bakersfield, CA, where we stopped for the night. Temperatures never got below 74 degrees all night. I'm ready to leave here and head to Sequoia Natl park. Love farmer's markets!

  14. I never had Picasa before I got my new computer with Windows 8. No problem at all downloading/installing Picasa and now all I have to do is open Picasa plug my camera into a USB port and import the pictures. Nothing convoluted about it at all as I see it but then again you have much more expensive camera gear. My problem is understanding the point-n-shoot camera that I have that gives me very poor pictures when I point and shoot.

  15. We got our first "local" tomato at our Farmer's Market yesterday too... and as much as I love a nice ripe tomato I'd trade it in a heartbeat for a slice of that rustic Italian bread.

  16. Nice looking Farmer's Market and I'll bet those Tomatoes tasted good.

Transferring photos from a SD Card or a camera should be a seamless, totally automated operation in Windows 8 - that's how it's always worked with me. The first time I inserted my SD Card into the computer slot a pop-up window appeared asking me what I wanted to do with the images on the card. One of the options was to 'transfer the pics to Picasa'. I chose that and since then its all been automatic and simple. I don't use the Camera/USB cable method.

  18. When I saw Windows 8 at Costco, I got on the phone to HP and ordered two Windows 7 laptops so that my husband and I could delay the inevitable. Call me a Luddite, but I know how to use it and it does the things I want. Good luck with 8 and your tech support!

    1. OK, Allison, just for fun, I'll call you a Luddite! That's a first for me - so, thanks for the opportunity!!

  19. Well at least you are one for two if the Turkey Days turned out to be a turkey. The farmer's market looks great and I could eat about 2 quarts of those raspberries. Those temps do sound a little bit chilly. Has fall arrived already up there? It isn't even August yet.

  20. The next thing you know, there'll be snow on the ground and your Windows 8 problems will be insignificant... :cO

Enjoy those tomatoes, wish supermarket tomatoes actually had taste.

  21. We are cool here too, but not a cool as you. I prefer it this way. Those raspberries look good. My tomatoes are finished for the year. They were good while they lasted.

  22. I just love your comment to your son that is hilarious. I need to remember that one!
I feel your pain, this new hard drive had everything totally different for me. I hate change
when it interrupts my "normal" routine. I pray this one lasts for years as I don't want to
go through it again anytime soon!

  23. I always insert the SD card directly into my computer and iPhoto knows just what i want to do with the pictures. I also hate it when the developers keep updating software that works perfectly well. I quit applying the updates and may be sorry one of these days, but for now I don't have some strange change I don't understand. For some reason I don't digest tomatos very well any more, except for the heirloom varieties. I've never had a problem with them and they taste so delicious.
