When I was a youngster, I had a marvelous collection of marbles. They came in all colors of the rainbow, and I enjoyed just rolling them around in my hand. There were some beautiful cat’s eyes and many others that I can’t remember the names of. I’ve often wondered what happened to that prized bag of marbles. I don’t remember actually playing a game of marbles with them, but I’m sure I did.
When I arrived to open the VIS this morning, I was surprised to find a new supply of things to sell at the nature store. Among those items was about a couple of dozen bags of differently colored marbles. Each bag had a picture of an animal or natural phenomenon to go along with the colors in the bag. I was drawn to them, and ended up buying four different bags.
I ended up choosing Bumblebee, Wicked Owl, Ladybug, and Goldfish. What’s a grandmother to do with four bags of marbles? I do have a couple of grandsons that are about the age to perhaps be interested in marbles. Now I just have to figure out how to play marbles. Do any of you remember the rules? My granddaughters aren’t quite old enough for this, but I’ll store them next to the box of colors and coloring books for youthful visitors. In the meantime, I just may have to dig some of them out and roll them around in my hands.
It was a pretty slow day in the VIS with not much happening besides many many big construction trucks rolling by to dump their contents for the ongoing paving projects. Between the drought and the construction, there aren’t many birds to entice visitors down the refuge roads. A few little lantanas are still blooming in the butterfly garden…
…and there were a few what I think are some kind of sulphur butterflies feeding on the Turk’s cap. Not too exciting. I’m hoping to meet up with fellow bloggers I’ve never met tomorrow, and have offered to give them a tour of the refuge. We’ll see how that pans out.
Thanks for stopping by… talk to you later, Judy
Hi Judy been following you for a while. Saw your header picture, and thought you'd enjoy this short video. http://vimeo.com/31158841 It aired on the Weather channel, was made by 2 young women in England and is titled Murmuration. If you haven't seen it you'll be in awe. Enjoy
ReplyDeleteThis might help you to teach your grandson how to play marbles.

My brother and his friends played when we were little kids. I think they drew a circle and I think I remember a marble he called an Aggie?
Have fun!
I can remember playing marbles but sure don't remember any of the games we played!!..those ones you got are nice colours!!
ReplyDeleteI don't remember ever playing marbles, but I like the looks and feel of marbles. I looked up marbles on the internet and found that same video that hobopals recommends. That video makes ME want to play marbles!
ReplyDeleteButterflies are so neat and graceful. The move from flower to flower with such grace. Oh to move like a butterfly!
ReplyDeleteI too remember having marbles, but not playing with them.
ReplyDeleteI had a gorgeous collection of marbles as a kid too and I have no idea what happened to them. Bet my younger brother snitched them when I went off to college
ReplyDeleteThe only marble game I remember is putting them in a circle and then knocking them out by a shooting a marble into the circle

ReplyDeletedont forget read Tropical Paradise of BALI :)
The joy of children is - even if they don't have an actual game with rules and such, they will make up their own game to play with those beautiful marbles.
ReplyDeleteI had marbles too. I remember putting them in a circle and shooting a bigger one into the middle I believe someone called it and aggie. Anyway I wasn't very good at it cause I would lose all my marbles. (maybe thats whats wrong with me).
ReplyDeleteThose sure are pretty marbles you have
I remember that most of the terms ended in "ie" like aggies, peekies, puries, steelies (ball bearings)etc.... Also the bigger marbles used to knock the marbles out of the circle (for keepsies) were called Shooters. We also played chasies, where we leap frogged all over the playground until we hit the other guys marble and got to keep it, usually a great shooter. Remembering this kind of crap helps me fight alaheimers.
ReplyDeleteHell, I lost my marbles years ago. Try not to lose yours.
ReplyDeleteCount me in as one of those who lost their marbles years ago as well.
ReplyDeleteIf I remember right a marble and a stout slingshot was a pretty potent combination when I was a boy,I also remember the window in the neighbors garage that used to be there before I discovered the combination, and standing for supper that night.Be safe out there. Sam & Donna.
ReplyDeleteI remember drawing a circle on the ground and using my shooter marble to knock out the others marble from the circle. You keep the marble you knocked out....on another note... Our deer has home depot 2x2 as legs and everything else is from the woods surrounding our site...See ya!
ReplyDeleteI used to carry all my marbles around in a purple Crown Royal bag! I lost all my marbles years ago.
ReplyDeleteWe have a tea lite candle holder made from a brandy snifter and pieces of marble..I put it on our picnic table...You could get really crafty and make something like it..It really looks pretty at night when lit....just sayin'.
ReplyDeleteAlways nice to meet up with fellow bloggers!
Oh, marbles! What wonderful memories. I remember shooters being bigger than regular marbles and drawing a ring to play and that you were supposed to knuckle down when shooting but I never got good enough to win anyone's marbles. My aunt gave us each a small leather bag one year: my brothers' bags contained marbles but mine contained jacks. I was much better at playing jacks. I still had that bag of jacks until recently but all my jack balls were dead so the jacks and bag went to Goodwill in the last round of donations.

I played marbles and had a drawstring bag made of a material like chamois to hold them. We played "keepsies" most of the time, as I recall.
ReplyDeleteRuss had a marvelous marble collection...until he lost most of them playing marbles with our granddaughter. Just make a circle, in the dirt or with a string in the house, each put in the same number of marbles in the circle, and take turns trying to shoot them out with you shooter marble. If you get the marble out of the circle it's yours to keep. Watch out for those youngsters - they'll hustle you! I love those marble colors and wish I could find some like that for my Emmie.
ReplyDeleteThe marbles are so colorful... I remember my brother playing with marbles and I know for sure my husband did. Have fun rolling them around!!!
ReplyDeleteTravel safe

Buying bags of marbles? I see you are returning to your wild and misspent youth! ;c)
ReplyDeleteWhat great memories you've called forth from the normally dark regions of my brain.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was in grade school, I had LOTS of marbles. We played lots of games for keeps and got more marbles if we were good.
I googled "How to play marbles" since I only played a game where we drew a circle and used our big shooters to shoot the other guys marbles out of the circle - and into our own bags. Then we enjoyed going through our marbles and picking out the prettiest. I use to retire my favorite marbles so I wouldn't lose them. But you'll find both text and videos galoore and will also get all the history of marbles. I think I'll read and watch today since it is very cold and cloudy and I need to do some personal work but need to procrastinate.
Thanks for the memories. Do you ship?
I played marbles with my brothers when we were young but I don't remember how to do it either. I love the header photo. I had the opportunity to see the snow geese at a refuge in Missouri once and watching those large flocks take off was amazing and the sounds were just as amazing.

ReplyDeleteIt is not unusual for us senior to lose our marbles.
Surprised none of ladies mentioned the big craze as pre-teen/teenagers we fried the marbles. This made them crack, you could use them in a lot of ways, including gluing them together to make a necklace.
ReplyDeleteBeing a country kid we played a lot of marbles, just like everyone said...draw a ring and take as many marbles as you could. of course we always gave each other our marbles back, they were a precious commodity in rural america in the 50's
