The water pressure at my site leaves a lot to be desired. It’s a real challenge to take a shower. The water barely comes out of the showerhead. I’d do better if I used the rig’s water pump, but there’s a problem with that. I really don’t want to fill my fresh water tank with the water here. We don’t drink this water because of the high content of minerals and such. It’s a little fragrant, also. There is a reverse osmosis machine in the community building, and we all cart drinking water in containers from there to our rigs. I haven’t had a water pressure problem in the past here, but then I’ve never stayed in this particular site. I think I’m going to have to ask one of the maintenance guys about this.
Anyway, after my sort of shower this morning, I noticed that there was a cattle drive about to take place on the road adjacent to the volunteer village.
I grabbed my camera and dashed out the door to record this moving of cattle from one pasture to another.
The cowboys on horses really moved this herd out down FM1985 heading east.
Herds are gathered and moved quite often. These are all cows, and they’ll start dropping their calves along about February. They are quite a mix of different breeds.
One bunch of them headed off down through an open gate, and the cowboys had to dash after them and get them back to the main herd. You can just imagine what the road looks like after they pass… cow pie heaven!
It was while I was recording this cattle drive that I donated at least a pint of blood to the local mosquito population. I made the mistake of putting on a pair of shorts after my shower because of the warm temperatures, and at one point I slapped at least 15 mosquitoes that were dining on my legs! Ugh! I can’t remember those little buggers being so bad in broad daylight before.
That was the excitement for today. While I did my laundry, I also worked on putting all new bar code stickers on the VIS inventory that is stored in the community building. I’m hoping Stephanie, the volunteer coordinator, will have a work schedule for me tomorrow when she returns to work after her long holiday weekend.
Thanks for stopping by…. talk to you later, Judy
nice shots of the cattle drive!!!...what a treat to be able to see that!..cow pies and all!
ReplyDeleteI still can't get past all the mosquitoes. I certainly won't be visiting you any time soon.
ReplyDeleteI can't remember if you have a particular reason for not using Avon Skin So Soft Bug Guard. I absolutely love it and couldn't be without it. If you would like some, I think I brought a brand new bottle and there aren't any bugs here, so I'd be glad to mail it to you. Please let me know - you would find a world of difference.
ReplyDeleteIn Ireland the farmers moved cows quite often from field to field, but they (the farmers) were on foot and sometimes had a dog to help. They just went over the country roads and if you drove up on a herd you just waited. The sheep were even a longer wait because there were more of them in a flock. Kept the dogs busy, and they were so much fun to watch. But I like cows the best - people don't realize what individual personalities they have - I'm mostly talking about the breeding stock, but they all like you to talk to them.
That Cattle drive reminds me of the book I am reading at the moment which takes place in the early 1920's & deals with herding cattle on a ranch in the Chiricahua Mountains. Quite cowincidental:))
ReplyDeleteIt looks like you spent a day in the old west :)
ReplyDeleteVery nice pictures of the cows, but need better ones of the cowboys!
ReplyDeleteI don't think we will go to that reserve. I really hate mosquitoes.
ReplyDeleteNice cattle pics! I hate mosquitos!!
ReplyDeleteLike the pictures of the cattle drive. We saw one last Fall when we were in Adele, OR. Quite the sight to see.
ReplyDeleteHate those little mosquitos! Use Avon Skin So Soft lotion for that and it really helps.
If you weren't so sweet the mesquitos would bite so much!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteTravel Safe
Ditto everyone else on the mosquitoes. I guess time of year doesn't make a difference there. I thought they only came out in summer...at least that's the only time I've experienced them.
ReplyDeleteLooks like you had a great time on your cruise. Love all the pictures, but good to see your are back and taking more pictures of birds.
