Reflections on the summer

As some of you know, this is the first time in the last four years that I’ve spent a large block of time (four months) without workamping/volunteering somewhere. It’s been an interesting experience, and while I was doing my pack up chores today, I took some time to reflect on how I feel about that.

IMG_3774(all of tonight’s photos are of this year’s batch of new Rufous hummingbirds in Arco, ID)

The RV Life of Mike & G, in a recent blog, talked about how she and her husband are finding their rhythm for fulltiming.  My rhythm has been volunteering for my four years on the road.  I have enjoyed every minute of it!  But, this four months has opened my eyes to the joy of not having any commitments.

_MG_3794I’ve been able to spend a couple of months exploring the wonders of the Yellowstone area, and on my own time schedule.

_MG_3805Red Rock RV Park was a financial extravagance for me for the month of July, but my budget survived.  I’ve met a lot of wonderful fellow volunteers over the last four years, but I also have met some really fine people while I’ve been on “vacation.”

_MG_3815It’s a lot to think about.  Perhaps my rhythm will be dancing to a new tune.  I may be ready for a more even mixture of volunteering and non-working adventures.

_MG_3826Since I’m already booked pretty solid through next April with volunteer assignments, I guess I’ll have plenty of time to think about it.  :)  In the meantime, I can’t wait to get to Malheur NWR, and learn all about the high desert of eastern Oregon.  Tomorrow, I’m off to a Passport America Park outside of Boise, ID.  I hope it’s a good one.  :)

Thanks for stopping by….talk to you later,  Judy

P.S. I just can’t seem to get links to other’s blogs in the way I want to.  :(  Help!

  2. Your pictures of the hummingbirds are just simply fantastic!! One day we will graduate to this level...until then we have alot of practicing to do.
Being tied to a schedule was the hardest thing for us to adjust to at FDR (and that schedule was pretty flexible). We know that we will either volunteer, sit for a spell or travel slowly for the first two years. When we are a tad older Mike can begin to draw his retirement $ and then we will be a little better off financially. I do enjoy all the things you learn from volunteering.
I can't wait to hear all about Malheur NWR.

  3. Your hummer pictures are outstanding! I was sitting outside watching one at the feeder this evening, and he kept flying toward me and hovering, then back and forth. He was trying to tell me something and I feel bad that I couldn't figure it out. There is still plenty of liquid in the feeder, and I clean it well when I refill it, so I'm not sure what he was trying to convey to me but it was definitely a communicating thing on his part.

It can be difficult to find the right mix of volunteering and just traveling/exploring/visiting/relaxing, but you seem to be doing a great job of it. I can't wait to see all the wonderful photos you will take at Malheur!

  4. Malheur NWR--I looked it up on the map because we haven't been there. I hope you enjoy your stay in Oregon.

Judy, thanks for answering my questions about your photos. I think your photography is exceptional. You are very talented!

  5. Hi Judy: I posted a reply comment to your question on my blog and then came to read your post for today. Maybe I answered the wrong question for you. I use LW which I think you also use.

When you make a new post you'll see a box up at the top right tool bar area that says Hyperlink (I think it says). Click on that and a box will pop up on your screen. It will have the http// stuff there with a blank space. Type in the blog link you want to use. If I want yours, all I have to type is Travels and the rest pops up and I just click to get in in the space. Then go down to the blank box below and type in what you want to appear in your post. In my blog for you I'd type Judy then click on the word "INSERT" and you should be good to go.

Rick will probably see your question and give you a great reply!

  6. Hello Judy,
    As always, great photo's!

As for the sap on the shirt, I'd go for it a year ago in Yellowstone, but not in the motorhome! lol

    Happy pondering.....

  8. Volunteering has been on our list of things to do, but somehow it has not made it to the top.

We love the freedom to travel and see as much as possible. I think we would need to find very short term volunteer work. It is hard to stay in one place to long. :)

  9. Judy your pictures of the Hummer's are beautiful you have certainly mastered your new camera.

I would think that a combination of volunteering and vacation would be a good mix. You always need some R&R time for yourself.

  10. Now if I can just have the patience to wait for the one hummer my son saw at our feeder I just might get a picture, about when in the fall do they head south out of Mo. Be safe out there. Sam & Donna.

  11. Judy,

Love the hummer pictures. I haven't seen one since we left Indiana. I have a feeder out, but I think we are too far away from a water source.

I think you deserve more personal time, but no matter what you decide, I know your blog will always be interesting. Pidge

  12. Terrific hummer photos, Judy. You sure do a great job with those.

Now, about clickable names in blogs, it's pretty easy in Live Writer, here's how.

Let's suppose you wanted to put in a clickable link to my blog. The technical name for this is "inserting a hyperlink". Let's use the following typical sentence as an example o.k.

"I was reading Rick and Paulette's blog this morning and noticed that............. " Now, you want to make Rick and Paulette's a clickable name, or hyperlink, so, the first thing you need to do is make sure you have the correct address for the blog - i.e. the http://rickpaulettervjournal.blogspot.com/ thingie, o.k.

The easiest way to get this is to go to my blog, and copy the name direct from the http: address at the top.

    Then:

    1. Use your mouse and left-click to highlight the words Rick and Paulette's
    2. In Live Writer, go to the Toolbar at the top and click on Insert > Hyperlink
    3. Then either type, or copy and paste, the web address(http://rick.............) into the "Web Address" blog next to Link To
    4. Click "Insert"

    That's it....................... rick

  14. Mighty fine hummer pics. Kelly & I considered the workamping/volunteer thing early on but realized we are just not out for that sort of thing. Kelly works closely with the public all the time we are home & I did my stint in retail years ago so when we head south we just kind of want total freedom, peace & quiet. No commitments, no agendas & most of all, no people problems.
