Fine dining on Henry’s Lake Reservoir

It was another fine day in the neighborhood, but since it was a Saturday, I didn’t do any touring to speak of.  The weekends are just so jam packed at all the venues, that I don’t venture out much.

I did have to get a half gallon of milk, though, so this afternoon Emma and I headed out to the tiny grocery about eight miles from camp.  I decided I’d take a little afternoon drive to the Henry’s Lake Reservoir Dam first.  That’s where I got to see the Western Grebe for the first time a couple of weeks ago.  I wanted to have another look, and hoped the birds were still near the dam.

What I witnessed as I drove over the dam was a grebe family picnic!   The youngster was trying to hitch a ride on mom’s back while dad was out fishing.  :)

Dad was playing a little keep away with the fish, but the youngster was sure interested as it peered over mom’s back.

“Please Dad, I’m starving!”                                   “Thanks, Dad.”
I bet these parents are really kept busy keeping their offspring fed.  Soon, Dad was off fishing again.

This time he came up with a crawfish (or crawdad, or crayfish depending on where you’re from).  The young one was still hungry.   :)

Of course, I don’t know for sure which adult was the female, or which one was the male.  I’m just assuming the male was “bringing home the bacon!”  This little scenario took place quite a distance from where I was standing, but it made for an interesting afternoon to peek into the lives of these Western grebes.  I may return in the early morning to see if they’ll come in a little closer to shore.  The lake is quite busy on a Saturday afternoon.

Thanks for stopping by….talk to you later,  Judy
