Can you believe no bison jam?

We woke up to pretty dense fog this morning, but decided to head to Yellowstone anyway.

As we headed towards Madison Junction, we had a brief moment of blue skies as the sun worked to burn away the fog.

Kurt wanted to see Old Faithful, so that’s where we headed first.  The patches of blue that you see didn’t last very long, and the skies turned very cloudy.  I was really surprised at the lack of wildlife wherever we went today.  No elk anywhere around Madison.  No bison jams at all.  We did spot three individual bison, each in the distance.  A few ravens, and that was it.  I was rather disappointed.

I couldn’t wait to show Kurt the Grand Prismatic Spring at the Midway Geyser Basin.  He was a little leery about doing the hike up to it, but I assured him it was well worth it.  Ha!  Not today.  Mother Nature provided the fog, and the winds had the steam in our faces, so none of the glorious colors showed through.  Between my bum back, and his bum hips and feet, that little hike did us in for any further hiking.  Almost made me feel like I was ready for a Hover-Round.  Crying face

By the time we made it to Old Faithful, it had started raining, so we viewed the eruption from inside the Visitors Center.  This day at one of my favorite places in the country was not going well at all.  Due to a road closure, we had to turn around and head back to Madison.

I had packed some crackers, cheese, salami, and raisins, so we stopped at a picnic area just before the Firehole Lake Drive.  As we were munching away, I spotted a gray jay in one of the pine trees.  I know I shouldn’t have, but I impulsively held up a half of a Ritz cracker.  That camp robber landed right in the palm of my hand, looked around, and snatched that cracker.  Then it came back to the picnic table to have a drink of water in one of the puddles left on top of the table by the rain.  That was probably the highlight of the day for me.

We did take the Firehole Lake Drive, and I did get a few shots, but conditions were just not ideal today.  There’s another road closure between Norris and Mammoth Hot Springs.  The rain continued as we made our way to Canyon Village, and the wildlife stayed in hiding.  We turned around there and headed back to camp.

The road closures have certainly changed my way of showing Kurt Yellowstone this year.  I think we’ll head over to Hayden Valley tomorrow in hopes of seeing more wildlife and on to Fishing Bridge.  The forecast for the next two days looks pretty good, if you can believe what you read.

Thanks for stopping by… talk to you later,  Judy

  4. Sorry to hear that the day was kind of a wash out weather wise. I do hope the weather is much better tomorrow. On the brighter note, the pics were great and the fog made them look quite awesome.

  6. Despite the weather I think your photos still turned out well. I know the bright colours aren't there but the fog/mist and the clouds gives them a feel of it's own.

Hope you have better luck with the weather over the next few days.

  7. Our guests had told us about the road closures--bummer. Here's hoping you see lots more wildlife tomorrow, we had beautiful weather over here today just 30 miles as the crow flies from Yellowstone--what's up with that???

  8. I hate it when things like this happen. Hope tomorrow brings better sights. But the pictures you did get are pretty neat. The fog and rain lent mystery.

  10. Those cloudy skies can wreak havoc on the colors and on the ability to see Old faithful well. Keep after it you will get some good views.

  11. Sure hope you have better weather! I think road closures must be a regular occurrence--we had them when we were there in 2010. Certainly makes for more driving & the possibility that you may not see all of the park during your visit. Maybe a trip to Cody for the Buffalo Bill Museum?

  12. Oh rats. So sorry this stupid weather didn't cooperate. Even if it is a little foggy, the visit would have been fine but with the dumb rain, I can see how it would put a damper on your day.

  13. Well, even foggy days make some pretty neat pictures!

  14. Come on down to Gros Ventre campground at Grand Teton NP. The bison herd walked right behind our site yesterday!
It was rainy off and on here yesterday, too, but the forecast looks great for the next few days. Have fun! Look forward to your photos since we aren't going to venture into Yellowstone this time around.

  15. Hopefully the weather will clear for you! How is the traffic? That is one thing I always hated about Yellowstone:(

  16. Love those jays - such little thieves, but then you are an accessory to the thieving!

I have just about given up on Yellowstone/Grand Tetons. I ran into closed roads one year and too many tourists in another attempt to enjoy it, and I don't think I'll make another attempt.

  17. My first thought when I saw your title today was how does one make jam out of Bison? And who would want it anyhow? Do have to say I've had some real good streaks and even meatloaf made from Bison meat.

  18. Even with the poor weather you managed to get some pretty great pics! Hope the sun's out today.

  19. Many years ago, when we were headed for Yellowstone, the weather was horrid - freezing and rainy. Four others were to join us from Florida, so my hopes of a good time were scanty. However, as their plain landed, the skies cleared and remained so for the week of their stay. We had a glorious time in the never-ending sunshine, although there was a fair amount of snow for the Florida folks to play in.

A good time was had by all.

    Virtual hugs,

  21. We went to Yellowstone three years ago on December 20, in a snow coach. Just about deserted and so, so beautiful!

  23. Sometimes we'll crinkle some dry leaves just to see if there are any Jays in the area. It sounds like a Cliff Bar being opened and they come flying in!
So sorry your day was not as expected. You'll just have to go back some time.
