Back to work

I finally felt well enough to work in the VIS this weekend.  I didn’t think I could manage two full days, so a person was supposed to relieve me each day.  I ended up working 7 hours on Saturday which was about two hours too long.  I guess there was a slight problem with communications there.

This morning, Dorothy came in with me so that I could give her a review on running the VIS, and I was able to leave and be back to the rig by about 1:00.  That was about the right amount of time.

I ran into this little dude who was trying to sign in at the registration booth.  I think the little suction cups on the toes of tree frogs are cool.

The last couple of days have been in the 80’s, which is about ten degrees above normal for this area.  Those temps have been accompanied by very high southerly winds, but the Turk's cap are still blooming and the gulf fritillaries are still around.

Migrating birds continue to arrive at the refuge.  There was a large flock of white-crowned sparrows singing their hearts out today in the butterfly gardens, and each morning and night I am serenaded by the moving flocks of geese in the skies over the rig.  Thousands of boat-tailed grackles continue to descend on the RV pads each morning around 6:00.  I don’t know what the attraction is for them, and I’m getting a little tired of all the white wash on my rig.  Smile with tongue out

Had a little mystery going on the last couple of days.  Emma has one of those stuffingless(?) fox toys to play with outside.  She loves to shake it up and toss it around after I give her dinner each night.  Well, it went missing yesterday.  I looked everywhere…under the cars and rig, under the picnic table, etc.  It was no where to be found.  It was still missing this morning.  Then suddenly this afternoon, it reappeared in the middle of our little yard.  I have no idea where it went to or how it reappeared.  Hmmm…

Thanks for stopping by… talk to you later,  Judy

  2. Love the picture of the sparrow. Please continue to take it slow with your back. I have re-injured mine before by trying to rush the healing process :-/

Your post today sounds so peaceful and rejuvenating. We humans need that!

  3. Glad you're feeling better. Jack has bones buried all through out the house. Once, Rich and I watched him take books out of a box, but a rawhide bone in, and put the books back on top. Then he looked back at us very suspiciously as if to say, "You saw." He uncovered it and took it elsewhere in the house to hide it. Uh, Jack, we were the ones who gave it to you.

Again, glad you're getting better, but as another poster said, don't rush it--you'll wind up back where you started. Great pictures.

  7. Glad you are feeling better! Maybe the frog thought it had to register as a new occupant of the refuge?

  8. Glad the back is better, but take it slow and easy. Pamper yourself. And don't lift anything!

  9. Slow and steady wins the race. Not sure what that has to do with anything but thought I'd say it anyhow. Glad you were feeling good enough to work a few hours. Disappearing toys. And the mystery deepens.

  15. I'm happy to hear your feeling better and that you know your limits. That will go far in your recovery.

We often have disappearing and reappearing toys around here. One of those little mysteries in life I can live with.

    Happy, Waggin' Tails, FUREVER!

  16. Hope you continue to improve and have no more troubles. You definitely need to come out here. We now only have to work 3-4 hours at the VIS on any day and I think will only have to work 2 days a week, at least while we have 6 volunteers. And we are working in pairs then so we can take lots of breaks. I explained it all in my latest blog.

And Roming is just hanging out with the visitors on the various platforms - we have three refuges in our complex with them.

Loved the pics as always. Love the tuffed sparrow. I bet Emma hid her toy in the house and then she brought it back out.

  19. Don't you just love the White Crowned Sparrow song, how they sing their hearts out?!
We have flocks of Gold Crowned Sparrows and their melody sounds like the beginning of the "Sesame Street" theme! LOL
I forgot how much larger they are than the white crowns!
    Keep up the great photography!

  20. The fairies took the fox to play with, and then returned it.

  22. I remember last year in Borrego Springs when Checkers slipped over to a neighboring rig and stealthily brought back one of the little dog's toys that was living there. It was the next day before I realized where Checkers 'new toy' really belonged. Waited until after dark and stealthily returned the toy to their yard:))
