Don’t know which choice to make

A little background first:  About a month ago, the electricity to the entire campground went out for three full days.  I ran my generator during that time, and used up a little under a quarter of a tank of gas.  The temps were in the 90’s.  Then, a week ago, a squirrel bit the dust and knocked out one of the transformers.  I ran the generator for several hours.  Yesterday, a tree fell down and took out the electricity, and I ran the generator for eight hours before it was fixed.  Today, the campground is pretty full for the holiday weekend, and everyone was running their AC because temps were again in the 90’s.  Guess what?  The electricity went out again.  This time it was only for under an hour, and I had returned to the rig soon enough to get Emma outside until it came on again.

Another hour passed, there was a big boom, and another transformer exploded.  No electricity!  I can certainly live without these kinds of 4th of July fireworks.  Smile with tongue outAfter about an hour, I tuned the generator on once again.  Eventually Dean, the owner, came around on his golf cart to tell us the verdict.  There are four transformers in the campground that are still working.  Of course, I’m on the one that is toast, and cannot be fixed until at least Tuesday.  So, what’s a girl to do?

I do have several choices.  1. I can run the generator for the next three days, and monitor the gas tank consumption.  I might possibly have to drive to a gas station to fill the tank back up.  2.  I could pack up everything in my frig, Emma, clothes, etc., and move to my daughter’s house for three days.  Robyn’s is not exactly a dog friendly house, and I don’t have any coolers for moving all the food.  3.  After talking to Dean, he did offer that I could move the rig to a different site with electricity and water (no sewer) until things get fixed.  Whether moving the rig 50 yards or 500 miles, it’s the same amount of work.  I’d leave the DISH, bird feeders, etc. behind for the temporary move.  It’s too late in the day to do anything tonight, so I’ll just muddle it over in my mind.  Any input?

There was a reason I was gone for a good portion of the day.

Perhaps you remember when I posted this picture about a month ago of the outline of the pool Robyn and Dennis were having installed in their back yard.

Well, today is was ready to be used!  I just couldn’t refuse a chance to enjoy a dip with Robyn and the ‘grandgirls’.   What a refreshing and fun couple of hours it was.  For me, there’s not much better than splashing around in a private pool when it’s 95* outside.  It’s been a long time since I’ve had this luxury.  I must admit, though, that my shoulders and back are a little pink tonight, but it was worth it.  Hmmm, could this be another reason to return again next year?

Thanks for stopping by… talk to you later,  Judy

  1. I loved it when we had our own pool inTexas. It was often too hot to swim in the day time, but and evening dip was wonderful. We would turn the lights out and go in without our suits Nice!

  2. That was quick work on the pool...looks great. I think I would move to another site for until the electricity is fixed. Hard to say what's best since I don't know the layout of the park, etc., but I don't think I would run the generator 24/7 for all that time. You could do without sewer but not without the frig and A/C. Just my uninformed opinion LOL!!

  3. After seeing that beautiful swimming pool, I know where I'd be until the electricity problem was fixed!

  5. I'm with Merikay, a late night skinny dip is so refreshing!!! ;-)

I think I'd go a little crazy listening to our generator run for more then a couple of hours but packing up and moving is a huge pain as well. So glad I don't have to make the decision!

  6. How many gallons does it take per day? How far away is the nearest gas station? Could you get by with a few runs with a five gallon can?

Before we got a whole house propane generator we used to run a gas generator when we would have power outages. (Frequent in the winter here!) We had two 5 gallon cans and they would last for a couple of days.

But moving the rig may be less trouble!

  9. i think i would do anything to have ac and not have to spend money on gas.... and my own space, nice of them really to offer another spot for you. This seems a continual problem for that park, huh?

  10. If you hadn't already paid for the whole summer, AND if there was another park close to your daughter's house, I would think about changing parks. In the meantime, enjoy the pool and let us know which choice you make.

  11. Nice pool. good choice in the temporary move, no extra wear and tear on the generator. Be safe out there. Sam & Donna..

  12. I think I would seriously be looking for another park because it doesn't sound like the electricity thing is too stable where you are. For a temporary situation fix I might consider moving to the house with the pool. Of course I would have to be considerate enough to decide if somebody could put up with me for 3 days or not. A private pool would be great but you would never find me in a public pool that's for sure. Best of luck on your decision.......

  13. My vote is to change sites. That's a pain, but I'd rather have electric than the generator. I'm with Al, I'd be worried about the stability of electric in that park.

Lucky you though - what a nice pool to be able to use.

  14. Just wondering why your frig can't run on propane for a few days? Or do you not have propane in your rig? Of course that doesn't help the AC problem, but at least you wouldn't have to run the generator 24/7.

  15. P.S. I think you should be asking the park owner for a discount on your rent!

  16. Moving might not be too bad - except that you would have to move back again in a couple of days, so double the hassle.

Running the generator... unappealing, isn't it? But easy. Can your refrig hold the cold well enough to get by overnight?

House with pool... hmmmm, appealing but some effort, and not so good for Emma.

No great options! The frequent problems with electricity certainly make the park seem unappealing (to me). I realize it isn't necessarily the park's fault, but still - you seem to have to deal with this problem WAY too often!

  17. I would move to the other spot. It's a pain to get it ready to move but for that short distance I wouldn't get near as fussy as I would if we were going on the road. And then I wouldn't settle too much at the new spot so I wouldn't have much to do to move back to my spot. A not so dog friendly house just wouldn't do it for me. And the pool isn't that far away that you couldn't go enjoy it whenever you want. So that's my input for what it's worth. I couldn't stand having the generator run all the time.

  18. It seems that if there were another rv part close by, I might consider that. On the flip side, the owner of the campground seems to be considerate and helpful to you. However for now I think I might just take the temp. move to the house and enjoy the pool...it is a holiday weekend and campground is probably crazy right now.
    Good luck with your choice!

  19. It sounds like a toss up as to what is more work, moving to a new site or moving to your daughters but since i always like to sleep in my own bed I would move sites and it might be easier on Emma. That pool certainly looks inviting!

  20. I think investigating a new RV park might be in order. In the meantime, I'd be lounging at the pool until the holidays are over. It is a beauty.

  21. I would move sites or move to another park that may have better electricity. And then go visit my daughter anf her pool. ;-)
Glad you have so many choises but the decision in the end is yours!
    Have fun & Travel safe

  22. Our power went off for a wee while overnight and then this morning. Back on, but for how long? If it were me, I would be looking for some other park if there were one suitable. I'd be more concerned about leaving Maggie in the rig alone(our version of Emma) if the power were iffy. For the weekend, I'd probably move to another spot in the park. Had a similar situation in South Carolina at a campground. That's my two cents' worth!

  23. I'm for changing sites, but it seems to me that you would run the risk of having no electricity again because of the park's instability of same?

I wonder if it's time to decide on another park. One that has more stable electrical?

I don't think I have ever read a blog where the park had so many issues on the electricity before.

They need to upgrade to accomodate everyone needing A/c in their units!

At least then you would know that Emma would be fine if you left her in the Rig and ventured out somewhere.

I'm sure the park owner where you are would understand.

    Cheers!

  24. We would have been long gone after the first few times. Life is way too short to have to live with all those hassles. Our biggest concern would be for Emma if you left her in your rig for any length of time in that heat if the electricity went out again...

  25. If it were up to me, I'd move down to the other site until Tuesday or go to Robyn's...and time with those precious kiddos! Good luck on what you decided...breaking down is such a pain, but you never know what adventure this will lead you to...good luck and hug Emma.

  26. When we got flooded out of our full hookup site last summer we did the temporary move to a no sewer site. Yes, it was a hassle but better than staying put where we would probably have been dry but where we, also, would have had no power. I cannot tolerate the generator running all day and we have not put solar on this rig so we felt we had no choice.

Moving to your daughter's might be tempting but since Emma wouldn't be happy there, neither would you.

I would also be researching other potential parks for next year. We lucked out in finding the one we are in this year after having given up hope of finding anything long term except a KOA in this area.
