A sad day in Blog land

This afternoon I was shocked to read KarenInTheWoods’ blog to learn that fellow RV blogger Hazel had died early this morning.  It’s one of those awful things that take you by surprise.

I didn’t know Hazel well, but we had been reading each others blogs for quite some time.

IMG_1386She even came to take one of my bird tours at Imperial NWR last December.   She brought her beloved greyhounds with her, and they behaved splendidly in her vehicle while she went on the tour.

I think I’ve only met three or four other solo female fulltime RVers, and Hazel was one of them.  She also did a lot of volunteering at New Mexico state parks.  We had a lot in common, but she was obviously more fashion conscious than I.  Notice the matching boots and jacket?   I’m sorry to see her go before I could get to know her better.  Karen, highlighted above, wrote a very nice tribute to Hazel.

I think Hazel was happy and lived her life the way she wanted to.  I can only hope I go as swiftly as she has.  Rest easy, my friend…

Thanks for stopping by… talk to you later,  Judy

  3. She was as much a "bird lady" as you are, Judy. She knew them by sight, sound, colors, etc. She could tell what bird was in the sky just by the way it was flying. An amazing woman. And yes, I think she did love life and was a happy person. And - she loved turquoise. At least she often had matching turquoise clothes when she wanted to look especially nice. I would guess meeting you was special for her, seeing the way she is dressed. :)

  5. I, like you, didn't know Hazel well but was following her blog and she was following mine or should I say my dog's Charlie. We had grown to love Hazel through her blogs and again, like you, found out through Karen, of her passing. Such a shock. She was so looking forward to her family coming to visit. It was so nice of you to do this post for her and what a lovely picture of her, Power and Hera. Thankyou ..... I feel the need to feel close to her at the moment and you post has helped. Dear Hazel ..... rest peacefully!!!! Lynn (Charlie's Mum).

  7. I didn't know Hazel, and visited her blog occasionally, but still sad to hear of her passing. I thought of leaving a comment on her last post, but she was moderating them. As KarenInTheWoods says, leaving our blog password with a trusted friend or family member is a smart idea.

  8. Hi everyone.. thanks for your kind words about Hazel. I just got an update from the rescue. Dear cat Chica has been adopted and is happily settling in her new home with two sisters and two other kitties. The dogs are both happy and settling in and will get more details from the rescue once their adoptions are final. I hope to get the password to Hazel's blog from her niece when she gets access to the motorhome soon.

  9. Sad, sad--how frightening that must have been for Hazel. Had me thinking if the cowboy would even know how to access my blog.

  10. Oh my Judy how sad. I wonder if having one of those alert necklaces would have enabled help to get to her before she was totally paralyzed. Really makes me think about traveling alone as I age. I didn't know Hazel or her blog but still I'm happy to hear that her animals are being taken care of and that someone knew to contact the rescue group. Life is short and the end can be sudden. But given the extent of her injuries, I am glad she passed on. Or at least that's what I would want in that situation.

  11. Sure hated to hear this. We met Hazel several times, the last being this year at Quartzite. She was a very nice person. Happy to hear the pets are being taken care of.

  13. Hazel's passing is such a loss--she was a kind, gentle, and caring woman. She was as calm & sweet as her beloved pups were. We should all ensure our loved ones have our passwords & other digital information. Jim & I have this all taken care of & our family is fully informed. The web site getyourshittogether.org was very helpful in getting us started. Rest in peace, Hazel.
