Some stuff that’s happened

I’m still working on getting my blogging mojo back, so thought I’d post some things that I’ve found interesting to me.

One of the things that I forgot to mention about Robyn and Phoebe’s visit is that I had asked fellow volunteer Linda to crochet two dolls… one with brown curly hair, and one with straight blonde hair.  Linda is always keeping herself busy, and had a big selection of dolls for Phoebe to pick from for herself and her sister Avery.  I was thrilled when Phoebe picked out the two dolls I had thought matched them.  Can’t imagine being able to make these cute things.  They even had underwear!

After the girls took off from the Yuma airport on Saturday, I got things ready for my Sunday morning bird tour.  Most of the wintering waterfowl have left to make their way slowly north, but this young red-tailed hawk was still around.  It was a good tour despite the lack of ducks, but I did encounter an interesting situation with one of the tour participants.  It was a first for me.  Before we left on the tour, one of the gentlemen approached me with a question.  He told me he was very ‘regular’, and had brought his own roll of toilet paper so could he make a dash to the woods during the middle of the tour?  What??  I told him that we only had one small woodlot at the beginning of the tour, and I didn’t think it would be appropriate for him to relieve himself.  He then said, “Oh, that’s okay, I’ll just hide behind a cactus.”  Ha!  There aren’t any cactus either… it’s just open fields.  OMG!  I almost burst out laughing.  I suggested he try to take care of business before we left at the public bathrooms.  That seemed to work.  Confused smile Can you believe that?

I then spent the rest of the day and Monday and today working the VC.  Not very interesting.  The wind really blasted all day today, and I came home tonight to things being blown around my site.

Emma and I sat outside as the sun was slowly sinking in the west.  She’s been inside the last three days while I worked so we took advantage of the time outside despite the high winds.

It wasn’t long before hundreds of turkey vultures were overhead.  I’ve never had a dog before that watched the sky so much.  She usually ignores birds, but turkey vultures just set her off.  What’s with that?  Bark, bark, bark!

IMG_0032

Throughout the winter, I’ve seen an occasional turkey vulture working the sky, but lately they’re moving through in droves.

Very interesting.  Maybe they’re all making their way to Hinckley, Ohio?

Since there aren’t any squirrels around my site, I guess Emma is guarding us in case I pass out on the patio. Thinking smile

I’ve got a few days off, and I’ve got to take care of taxes and changing my address.  I’m thinking of going to the Lettuce Days Festival if I can force myself into getting the bookwork stuff done by Saturday.  We’ll see if that happens.

                                                                                THE END!!

Thanks for stopping by… talk to you later,  Judy

  3. Those dolls are as cute as your Grands! What a nice gift for them! We are going back into the deep freeze again...we got to a plus 17 today but the wind was raw. Those Turkey Vultures are one ugly bird. Have fun at the Lettuce Festival:)

  4. I guess you should write a book about all the characters you have met while leading tours. The little dolls are so cute, and I know Robyn and Phoebe just love them.

  7. I've been on all day tours where folks headed off to a "pink" bush or a "blue" bush... depending on sex (the person not the bush).... but never encountered your situation. One of the funniest was when a bunch of women headed for some privacy behind some big rocks... darned if a train didn't come down the nearby tracks and have a fun time blowing the whistle. Then there was the SCA worker in Maine who apparently crapped his britches while on my tour.... oh well... as they say... s.... happens :-)

  8. What a thoughtful gift for the girls. They are adorable.
WOW...I had no idea that the water fowl would leave this early for the north. With the weather the way it is, they may turn around and be back real soon.

  9. That is the best "end" picture ever. They are such dolls themselves. I've been working on our taxes this week - so not fun. Well at least he had his own tp. Has he never seen the desert (and lack of coverage) before? Glad it all worked out for him. Great to see Emma at work protecting you. Wonder why she hates the buzzards so much.

  12. The little girls and the little little girls are very special. And the blog author is very original in getting these photos!
The story about the man and his toilet paper sure brings back memories of camp hosting and the oddities of folks' bathroom situations!

  13. Hi, Bird Lady. I can't find an email address, so will try here. We are in North TX. There is a large hawk on the ground in our yard. He must have a problem. Has been here two days. Just sits there and looks at us. What to do? I doubt the local shelter would be bothered. Thanks!!!!

  14. Your grandchildren are just adorable!..As for the"habitual bowel" guy...OMG, I would have not been able to contain myself...I probably would have looked at him and said, "Seriously????" You just cannot fix stupid. I would LOVE to go to the Lettuce Fesival!!! There are soooo many neat kinds of lettuce! Get some good salad ideas and post 'em!

  15. Thanks anyway, Judy. I found a way. Our animal services came & trapped the hired. I then delivered her 21 miles away to wildlife services. The story. She is a very large Cooper's hawk. Her wing is broken near her body. They said they will take her to a vet; we can call and ask about her. I mean, it's a bird. Who to ask? Judy! Now I know to feed one raw chicken next time.

Agree that your grandgirls are darling. I crochet, but haven't seen dolls as cute as those!!

  16. Trapped the bird. Should have proofread!

  17. 'Our' turkey vultures left in the fall and they're still not back. They must know something we don't ....? Those dolls are very similar to the ones my Mom made when my sister and I were small. We loved them to pieces (literary)! As for the TP incident, I can't believe people actually doing their business like that. Worst of all, nobody brings a little shovel to cover it up (as you should) and leave their toilet paper to blow all over the place! Disgusting!

  18. About those turkey buzzards hovering overhead ..... don't walk slow.

  19. We saw lots of black vultures in Florida. A first for me. Apparently there are some turkey vultures there too but we didn't see any.

  20. The girls will be very happy with their choices:) I would have handed the guy a plastic bag and a can of air freshener. Someday I will learn to read what I type before hitting the button:(

  27. You just reminded me I still need to figure out a "shovel" situation before the summer hiking season begins. I plan on doing longer hikes this year so I'll need to pack my "potty"!

  28. That first picture of Emma is, in MH), the best one of her you have ever taken. The dolls were darling also. It's nice to have friends that are caafty.

  29. I hesitate to correct the Bird Lady of Blogland but turkey vultures in droves is simply wrong and can not stand.

There are many words for a group of vultures.
A group of vultures may be a cast, committee, meal, vortex, venue and even wake.
Some sources state that a group of vultures circling in the air is called a kettle. But I can find no reference to them being in droves.

  30. I stand corrected Ed. Must have been a vortex. ;)

  31. Cute dolls for two lovely girls, have a nice end week greeting from Belgium.

  32. Well, I see the big winds didn't blow Emma away! I wonder if "a ton" of vultures would be correct. No matter, I wouldn't sit too still on the patio. Whenever we them circling overhead, we yell, "Hey, we ain't dead yet!" :- )
