A girls’ day at the beach

Diana, Emma, and I headed out this morning for a girls’ day at the beach on Dauphin Island, Alabama.  It was about an hours drive away.  I’ve never been much of a beach person (picture an alewife die off on the shores of Lake Michigan when I was growing up in Chicago).  I believe Diana has always been a beach person.

What a pleasant surprise it was for me to arrive at this mostly vacant white sand beach for the afternoon!  The water wasn’t brown, and the waves provided a lovely sound backdrop.

As I went about setting up my chair under the beach umbrella that Diana had brought, she took Emma on a little romp in the sand.  I had told her that the last time I took Emma near any sand, she was a lunatic and nearly pulled my arm out of its socket.  Thank goodness she’s calmed down some.  Emma was happy until…

Diana tried to coax her into the water.  Emma has always hated getting wet and even avoids small puddles that might get her feet wet.  She tried a sit down strike, but…

Diana was stronger, and Emma found herself in water over her head.  Of course, she naturally did the dog paddle for a few seconds.

As soon as she saw the shore, she was out of there!

“MOM, SHE MADE ME GO IN THE WATER AND I WAS SCARED!!”

We had a fun afternoon chit chatting away on the beach, and Emma and I went for a nice walk so I could look for some shells.  I did get my feet wet, but I’m not one for jumping in the ocean for a swim.  Guess I need to work on that.  The water wasn’t really cold at all.  Maybe next time.

I’m thinking this is a much nicer place to take Andy and his family for a day at the beach than at Biloxi Bay.  This Laughing Gull must have found something humorous in the waves.  Winking smile

Last night, I downloaded the new upgrade to Picasa, so when I went to edit my photos tonight there were new editing options available.  I gave one of them a try on this group of brown pelicans that was flying overhead.  Interesting, but I’m not sure how much I’ll use those new options.  I’ll have to play around with them a bit.  It’s back to work tomorrow for me.

Thanks for stopping by… talk to you later,  Judy

  1. I'm surprised Emma did not like the water. Most dogs like to run and play in the water. I dog used to bring driftwood to me.

  2. My black lab hated getting into the water. My granddaughter and I took him to Charleston SC about a year before he died, and she coaxed him into the shallow water. He didn't like the waves or having water splashed on him. I was surprised when Lady went right into a lake we camped at a few years ago.

  3. Jack, my daughter, and I were there last October. It was a particularly rough surf and waves were crashing over Jack's head and he was loving it. I was surprised because I'd had him on the gulf before, and he would run in, but try to beat the waves back to shore. Now, my Lizzie was a different story. I kept her on a long rope because she would have tried to swim to Europe! Lovely place. Take the ferry over to Ft. Morgan if you get a chance. It's a nice ride. I'll bet once Emma realizes that she got out alive, she'll want to go back in. Give her a pat for me.

  4. I'm jealous! I love the beach and the ocean...and we still have snow on the ground here!

One of our dogs also dislikes the water a lot but our lab is a natural and loves to swim and we can't keep her out if there's water.

  5. Judy, did you get to "the pier to nowhere?" You might want to take your son and his family there - it's cool to see. Turn right on the island road, drive a bit, and you'll see beach parking, picnic tables, and a boardwalk to the pier. Lots of sandy beach there also. Have fun! (Poor Emma was ascairt!)

  6. Poor Emma, I know how she feels. I don't like the water either. Well maybe I'd get in if its concrete and painted aqua blue.

  7. At least you finally got Emma to look at you for an awesome photo of her!

Did you find any shells? I love beachcombing!!!

  8. It was geat that you were able to find a beach that was dog friendly. All the beaches near Gulf Shores/Orange Beach say "no dogs allowed". Also in Florida. Great picture of Emma. Brandy doesn't like the water either, but our Chelsea loved it. She was my beach pal.

  9. Poor Emma, I know how she feels. I'll go in but usually reluctantly. I like the photo of the gull, sure seemed t have something to say.

  10. I like to listen to the ocean but not to go into it. It scares me to have the waves wash the sand out from under my feet.

  11. Some dogs just plain don't like the water - that's okay, she has other talents.

  12. I was brought up on the east coast and I love water and the ocean. So what am I doing in the desert? Still trying to figure that out.
Poor Emma she didn't look like she had a good time there for a while.

  14. Angel isn't crazy about the water, but loves to chase the water birds. (she never catches them---good thing, because almost all of them are bigger than her)
Neat edit option! Can you email me more about Picasa

  16. We have to carry Grace in too. She is just not a swimmer.

  17. Poor Emma, I'm not really crazy about the water either...I leave that to Sam and Riggs. Not only was the poor gal dragged into the water she had a bird laughing at her, how humiliating.

  18. I tried to get Michael to some of those same beaches before we came home, nope, not interested. Looks beautiful!

  19. Emma looks like a water dog. I'm surprised she didn't enjoy her swim.

  20. Loved the pelican pictures. The new gadget was very artsy.

I'm a water person through and through. I'd have been in that water in a splash and left Emma on the shore watching. I don't think we should ever force anyone to go into the water. Great picture of Emma though. Do give her a pat and tell her I'm on her side. She can have the beach chair while I play in the water.

  21. Poor Emma. We had a dog who was tentative around water, and then someone picked her up and threw her in. She never went near water again. I don't think your friend did Emma any favors.

  22. Poor Emma! On top of all that, she probably ended up having a bath because of all the sand and salt. A number of years ago, our last generation of dachshunds were Ginger and Heidi. Heidi loved the water and had to be on a leash or she would set out for the middle of the lake. Ginger was not fond of it but she would ride on the air mattress because she didn't want her kids out there without her. But they got the lake and not the ocean.

  23. I am sooo with Emma...I love to sit by the beach, listen to the waves and get some sunshine...But I do NOT swim where I cannot see the bottom and there is no chlorine or a ladder...What a nice place to relax...Poor Emma will totally run the other way when you bring out to water and the doggy shampoo!

  24. At least Emma looked your way for a picture...Ha! Nice relaxing day I bet
