Graceland? Don’t think so.

When I asked the woman at the front desk of Memphis South RV in Coldwater, MS, what to see in the area tomorrow, her first suggestion was Graceland.  She was shocked when I told her I never cared for Elvis.  I guess maybe it’s un-American, but it’s true.  Now, my brother, Kurt, owned a pair of blue suede shoes back in the day, but Elvis just never did anything for me.  I’m more of a white buck type of person.  Flirt male

Since I want to arrive in Scott, LA, on Monday, I decided to spend two nights here.  My drive today took me through four states, and Memphis was a bit of a pucker drive, but by 1:30 I was set up across from a minuscule pond about 150 yards from I-55.  I’m thinking that tomorrow Emma and I will take the scenic drive around Arkabutla Lake.  I may even stop in at the DeSoto County Museum along the way.

Remember when I had HLS (hairy leg syndrome) a few weeks back?  Well, now I’m developing a new malady with these colder temperatures: CFS (cracked finger syndrome).  I got out the bag balm and band aids last night, and was lathered up before I hit the hay.  I hate those painful cracks that develop on the tips of my fingers.  It’s none too soon for me to get further south to warmer climes.  On the bright side, nothing new broke down today.  Yahoo!  Just a little problem with the front end of the rig popping open as I move down the road.  That’s where the generator is located.  I just never know when the whole front of the rig below the windshield will decide to lean out.  Goofy.

Thanks for stopping by… talk to you later,  Judy

  1. Try clear nail polish on the cracks. You have to keep reapplying but it works well for me.

  2. Ah... you liked Pat Boone then... white buck shoes...

Fun post... sorry about your cracks and such. I think I need to go back in your archives for the HLS post ... I mean, that's funny.

Sandra, you put nail polish on the tips of your fingers? I never.

Can you wear gloves, Judy? I wear lotion socks to bed ... my old feet are so pitiful. I wonder if they make gloves for the same purpose... cracked fingers... sounds awful! ...

  3. I have little interest in Elvis, but enjoyed the Graceland tour. Next time in the area, the Tm Sawyer Campground in West Memphis is great. Right on the river and you can watch the boat traffic go by. West Memphis itself is very rough, but the campground is very nice.

  4. Judy, you did yourself a favor not going to Graceland. I went out of curiosity (just to pass it), but decided to have some fun with the people selling tickets. I told them that Jack wanted to see it all his life. Funny reaction. My brother lived and died for Elvis when we were younger. The only songs I ever liked of his were "Old Shep" and "I'll Be Home for Christmas". Both make me cry to this day.

Glad you're all put back together, again. After staying at Tom Sawyer Campground right on the Mississippi I moved on to a little campground in Holly Springs (think that's right) called Cloud 9. Met three other solo women in the park. One I camped with on the way back from the west. She was in Casper, Wyoming. Well, I've gabbed enough for one night. Love to Katie.

Have you tried Vaseline Intensive Care on your fingers? Never heard of nail polish, but I imagine it helps with the pain when you touch things. Well, this time I really have gabbed enough!

  5. Costco sells over the counter, a cortizon cream. That is the only cream that has ever worked on the cracks on my fingers. And they are sooooooooooo painful.

  6. My knuckles used to crack, you know, back when I lived in the North. I think the fingertip cracks are harder to deal with and more painful, but I was happy with that lotion with the Norwegian flag on it. Also lotion socks on my hands at night. And getting south.

  7. OMG...I have had cracked fingers forever..and my Dad did too. He carried chapstick in his pocket just for his cracked fingers...Mine crack and bleed and are very painful..I have found that Micitracin antibiotic ointment is the only thing that helps...
Graceland??? Den and I loved it! It took us back to the 50's and 60's...we did the whole tour...It was a memory for us, and I'm glad we did it, but it's not for everyone, for sure!
(Going thru Memphis is a white knuckle ride for me..the navigator. I cannot imagine driving it!!

  8. Clear nail polish! I have always used New Skin, though the principle would be the same...keep out the air.

Cotton gloves at night covering lotion or Vaseline does help, too.

Graceland wouldn't really interest me, either

  9. Graceland was only "okay" for us, even though we do enjoy most of Elvis' music. The problem for us was the price...a total rip off from a financial perspective.

  10. I'm with you, not an Elvis fan. I'd throw out a hip if I tried to do moves like he did (does, he's not really dead, you know).

I met Pat Boone a couple of years ago when he sang at a Memorial Day Ceremony at the Vietnam Memorial in DC. Yes, he had the white bucks on.

  11. I haven't been to Memphis but I enjoy visiting that area through others' blogs. I'm definitely not an Elvis fan, but I might go to Graceland just to see what's there.

We used to have basement storage doors that would pop out while we were driving. Evidently the factory didn't line up the catches properly. Dave was able to fix them but every so often I look in the mirror to see if anything is hanging open. ;)

  12. You can get the white gloves at drug stores to put on your hands at night to keep the lotion, vaseline, or whatever on your hands and off the bed sheets. Gene suggest wearing a pair of sewer gloves (new, of course). He would, but he's a guy.

  13. My finger is just now cracking, I haven't had that problem in years. I use New Skin, it really works, and I brought the little bottle with me. Unfortunately, it's so old, it turned my finger yellow. A new one is on my shopping list.

When I had lots of problems with cracking fingers, and discovered New Skin, I also got the fingertip covers (I don't know what they are called) - they are like the fingertips of latex gloves that have been cut off. They protect your fingertips, also, so they don't hurt as much.

Elvis used to embarrass me, weird, huh?, but I love his music.

  14. We skipped Graceland when we went through there. Down here in the dry heat my lips are starting to crack. I go through a ton of vaseline during the winter time. Looks like you got lots of suggestions for your fingers.

  15. Don't mind young Elvis but Graceland does not interest me in the least.

My hands crack bad in the winter, I just keep them lathered in lotion

  16. Agree with Good Luck Duck...that's Neutrogena and it is the only thing that works for me. Use sparingly as it's kinda greasy but I really slather it on at night. The cotton gloves are another great suggestion. I used to sleep with socks on my hands.

  17. "Thank you....thank you very much". Elvis has left the building!!

  18. Never have gone to Graceland...seems a bit pricy for what it offers.

  19. I guess Elvis was okay with me... but I was no doubt influenced by the older women in my life growing up. We went to see him when we were newly married and they did say what Al said!!!

Also went to Graceland when our boys were still at home. Over-rated... and really not in a very good neighborhood. Probably wouldn't go now if we hadn't already been.

I was hoping you would get to LA sooner. We are in Patterson until Monday, then heading east along highway 90 towards Florida, I think... I wanted to get to meet you!!! Next time!

    Be Safe!!

  21. After seeing your post about the RV place in Scott I looked up their web site. I saw that they sell Onan generators so I called to ask if they also service them. They do so had my generator serviced this week. None of the other RV places in Lafayette will service generators.

  22. Glad you're headed south Judy. Hopefully you can lose Murphy along the way! I'm reading the suggestions for dealing with the finger cracks with interest. Mine are usually okay, but Amazon is really rough on them -- getting VERY dry and need to take premptive measures...

  23. NO problem here with cracked fingers, etc. Maybe a little cracked in the head, but hey

  24. With all the suggestions hopefully you'll fins something to make those fingertips feel better. I'm ok with Elvis, not a huge fan though, but I think we would hit Graceland just to say we did.

  25. Went to Graceland and Beale street for my 60th, it was a long planned and looked forward to trip and did not disappoint! Different strokes :)

  26. Just say, "I was too young when Elvis was around!" LOL

  27. My oldest brother had white bucks. They came with a powder puff bag you slapped against the shoes to keep them white. Makeup for your shoes!

I have to slather on Nivea lotion. It's the only lotion that doesn't make my hands develop tiny blisters. My SIL thought I was making that up until her allergist told her to either use Nivea or a prescription lotion.

  28. Howdy Judy & Emma,
I'm with Judy on the Bag Balm for dry cracked hands.. Have used it ever since we had to milk in 20* weather.. My brother had hands cracked so badly he had to wear gloves ALL OF THE TIME and he was a cabinet-maker.. His dematalogist put him on some kind of medicine recently that cured it up; but now he's 74 yo and doesn't work any more!!!
I got to know the 'real Elvis', back in the 50s
and he was nothing like what that Tom Parker a..h..e turned him into.. I wouldn't waste my time going to Graceland..
    Here's wishing you and Emma:
Smooth roads, clear blue skies & balmy breezes!!

  29. Judy, stick with the Bag Balm! If it won't heal your skin nothing will, very good stuff.
