♫ My bags are packed, I’m ready to go…♪ ♫

What a week to pick to head to Sioux Falls, SD.  Looks like the entire road trip will involve temps in the 90’s.  Today was a busy prep day, and I started by giving the rig a good cleaning.  I always like returning to a clean rig.  I’ve found a kennel that will take Emma for the week, but I have to be back on Friday to pick her up.  I had to promise that, or they wouldn’t take her.  That means I won’t be able to do much of any sightseeing along the way.  It’s about 640 miles from here to Sioux Falls, and I’ll take two days to drive there.

I’ve made reservations at motels for two of the four nights along the way.  Tomorrow I’ll play it by ear since I have to drop Emma off first, and the kennel doesn’t open until 9:00.  My plan is to make it to Des Moines tomorrow, but we’ll see.  Besides a reservation in Sioux Falls, I made one in Kasson, MN, for Wednesday when I stop to visit my son, Andy and his family.  Turns out, it was about $20 cheaper to make the reservation on-line as opposed to just showing up.  I’m looking forward to four nights of long lasting showers, and not having to make my bed!  Smile

My bags are all packed except last minute things, and I’ve made a couple of three sandwiches to eat along the way.  I borrowed a cooler from Robyn, and have been bagging ice the last two days.  I’ve decided to take I-80 west to I-29 rather than taking I-90 to Sioux Falls.  I’ve done that route (I-90) hundreds of times, and reading a blog this morning I found out that all of the rest areas in Minnesota are closed due to the government budget problems.  Since I’m driving the car instead of the rig, I won’t have the convenience of an on-board bathroom.  Sad smile

Emma and I sat outside for a while this evening in the more than balmy 93* temperatures until my tee shirt was soaked.

I have a fuchsia basket hanging from an oak tree off of the deck, and I got to thinking about how it was going to fare for the next five days of very hot temps with no rain.  Hmmm, what to do?

I finally decided to put it under the rig in the back.  That’s where my basement air conditioner is, and when the AC is running, the moisture pulled out of the air in the rig drips down underneath it.  It’s pretty dark down there, but fuchsias are a shade loving plant and it should remain watered while I’m gone.  I will leave the AC on and set for 80 or 82 degrees.

I’ve shut the propane off, and tomorrow I’ll turn off the water on my way out.  Hope this little trip takes care of some of the hitch itch I’ve been feeling lately…

Thanks for stopping by… talk to you later,  Judy

Just curious, how often do you have to go to South Dakota to renew your drivers license?

  8. We're a ways south & west of S.F., in Nebraska. The thermometer said 100* today and high humidity. Miserable. Hope your car has a GOOD AC. Have a safe trip, watch for deer on the roads, there's plenty of them.

  14. Enjoy your windshield time! MN is not that much fun with rest stops closed. Been there, done that back in 2006. I also noticed an unusual number of "Out of Order" signs on restroom doors in smaller stores along the way, too. Right. Out of order my foot. Just didn't want road people using the facilities. Next time I do MN during a shutdown, I'm takin' a bucket with me! :) Have fun!

  16. When driving NY-Asheville and back, I tried to coordinate my rest stops with refueling. It worked quite well when I had the truck, but I get much better mileage with the Toyota so I didn't have to get gas as often.

I'll have to remember that about MN when I'm going back to CA.
