I’ve spent the last two days working on the breeding bird atlas surveys on the refuge. I don’t have any bird pictures tonight, but will include some of my other flying friends.
My shoulder has been a bit sore since Emma took me on my midnight ride into the dark unknown, but you can be sure that I’ve taken the bird feeders in each night just before sunset.
I don’t want to encounter another bandit in the night. I got a message on my computer tonight when I tried to upload these pics that there wasn’t room on my D drive to accommodate them. What? I checked the D drive, and sure enough, it was almost full.
I figured after seven years of taking pictures, that must be the culprit. So, after checking what I had saved on my external hard drive, I eliminated about three year’s worth of pictures. That involved close to 10,000 photos.
It turned out that it barely made a dent in my D drive capacity. I was stymied. Time to call my oldest son, Daniel, for some help. Thank goodness he was able to get on my computer via TeamViewer to investigate things. I’m no computer techie, and that’s what Dan does for a living.
To make a long story short, he figured out that when I had my external hard drive plugged in to back-up my computer, it backed it up onto my D drive instead of my external drive. He eliminated all those back-up files, and now I’m back to tons of space for my pictures. Whew! I’ll be visiting him down in Rochester in about a month, so he’ll fix things then with a new external hard drive that will save everything correctly.
In the meantime, I’m sitting here waiting for all of those photos I deleted to reload back onto the computer. Seems it will take about three more hours. It’s nice to have someone in the family to help me out quickly. If I couldn’t have gotten a hold of him, my next plan was to send a plea to Rick for help. I’m sure he was out walking the muttzo’s though at that time, since he’s a couple of time zones away.
Not very exciting stuff, but that’s the way it is for today. With the down loading going on, I’m thinking it may take half the night to publish this post.
Thanks for stopping by… talk to you later, Judy
You are so fortunate to have a son with those kinds of computer skills. Wow. You have taken a lot of photos.
ReplyDeleteI'm lucky to have a techie brother, too, but sometimes he's TOO geeky in his explanations and solutions! Glad you are back on track with your beautiful photos and being able to share them.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad your son was available to help. I think Rick was busy cuddling that new grandson of his :)
ReplyDeleteAlways good to have a techie in the family!
ReplyDeletenice to have your own IT go to guy :-)
ReplyDeleteGlad your frustrating situation turned out so good. I'm not surprised you have so many pictures - what a shame it would be to lose any of them!
ReplyDeleteHoly mackerel, that's a lot of photos!!! Glad your son was able to determine the culprit and make it right.
ReplyDeleteWhat ever would we do without our sons and TeamViewer!!!
ReplyDeleteCool pics of the bugs, moths and dragon flies
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear Dan was able to help you using TeamViewer, Judy. It would have been a real shame to somehow lose 10,000 photos especially if it was because of an accident. Dan obviously knows what he's doing. As for me, I did walk the muttzo's and I also was up at the hospital with my little grandson on 'burp patrol'.
ReplyDeletep.s. happy to help anytime it's needed.
Just think 10 years ago we wouldn't have dreamed we'd be this computer savy! Good thing you've got a techie in the family though! That's always so helpful.
ReplyDeleteSo glad to hear you back up your hard drive. Too many people don't understand how important that is. I was the Technology Integrator for our school district, and I harped on backing up daily. Happy to read you now have all the photos in a safe place.
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear all is well with our Bird Lady's photographs!
ReplyDeleteI am so un-tech savvy. I have to depend on techs wherever we've landed when the issues appear. How fortunate that there is a way remotely that your son can sort through the issue.
ReplyDeleteoh dear I hope your shoulder is going to be okay. That Rick is a handy guy alright.
ReplyDeleteI do believe that I am more inept at computer stuff than you are..I am clueless as to what you said about D drives...However, I will have MacGyver read your blog because we take a gazillion pictures and upload them to our computer..not sure if it is the X,Y, or Z drive ;-)
ReplyDeleteOnly 10,000 photos? What else do you do to take up your spare time? ;c)
ReplyDeleteI'm impressed that you gave birth to your own IT guy. Talk about planning ahead! :cD
Hi Judy:
ReplyDeleteI visited your blog for the first time today and look forward to more of your beautiful photos. I see that you've done some extensive traveling in the US. I'm not only a neophyte blogger, but a neophyte RV adventurer too. I'm planning to start out on a North American RV adventure in a couple of months - for at least a year, maybe more. What kind of RV do you have? I'm driving a little '94 Toyota Dolphin right now, but may 'upgrade' so I'm always looking for suggestions. Thanks and you can check my blog at: www.mps2343.blogspot.com

Sure am glad you saved your pictures. I'm still using an XP machine because I just don't want to have to read all those manuals. I need a son who can remote to me and just set it up for me. I'll have to ask Carrie if that's one of her boyfriend requirements. Hope your shoulder improves quickly and isn't badly bruised.
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean about waiting and waiting and waiting for things to load. I just went through it, too. But for everything! You are so lucky to have a son who is IT friendly. If I had it to do again, I think I'd steer both my kids in that direction and have two people to call on when I had computer issues. Wouldn't that be nice? Or go back to college and become an IT expert myself. That would be more work, but probably more efficient. :)
ReplyDeleteComputer-related problems are really not a good way to start your day. It’s a good thing that you have someone that can help you in this time of need. Though it’s always an advantage to have some sort of physical backup, like an external hard drive, for your files, should situations like these arise. I just hope after it has been installed and backed-up properly, it will never happen to this degree again.

Deleting those collection of photos must’ve been hard to you! Good thing Daniel was able to fix your computer and load them back again. That being said, it's always best to have an expert fix your computer, especially if you're not familiar with the repairs yourself. Poking around blindly can often lead to more damage than good. The silver lining of all this was that you learned the importance of backing up your files, so you won't have to worry should your computer crash again. All the best!
