Meet Flat Joey

After I worked this morning in the VC, I stopped at the mail box on the way back to the rig for lunch.  I pulled out an expected Netflix disc, but there was also a large envelope in the box addressed to Grandma Bell.  Hmm…  It came from Kasson, MN.  My oldest grandson Joseph lives in Kasson.

Inside was a letter from Flat Joey, sent by Joseph’s first grade teacher.  After reading the book “Flat Stanley”, Joseph chose me to send this letter to.

What a hoot!  As I went roving after lunch, my mind was in a whirl!  What adventures could I plan for the next couple of weeks?  I thought of several involving alligators, but had to remember the pictures would be seen by first graders.  Winking smile

So, meet Flat Joey.  We started out slow with looking at wild candyroot flowers this afternoon.  If I had a printer, I’d make a little book with pictures and a story to send to his class.

I’ll think of something to make Flat Joey’s visit exciting.  I couldn’t get him out of the car quick enough for a shot with this Sherman’s Fox Squirrel.  I’m hoping none of the other students have a relative that lives in a swamp.

                                                                               THE END!!

Thanks for stopping by… talk to you later,  Judy

  1. What fun! I am doing Flat Stanley for our grandson in St. Louis. You and your new buddy will have a blast. Just and FYI - I send the pictures and letters digitally. Enjoy!

  2. This is a great idea. You can usually get things printed at office supply stores or Fedex or Kinko's stores. Pics can be ordered online and picked up at Walgreen's. Do you have any of those stores near you?

  3. Flat Joey is going to have so much fun at the swamp! Yes, no doubt, Joseph's grandma leads the most adventurous life of all the 1st graders' grandmas!

    1. p.s. you can create a Powerpoint presentation for free with your Google account. Just go to http://drive.google.com and log in with your Google account. There, you can create a Presentation file, select whatever templates you'd like, add photos and text, and save it either as a Microsoft .PPT format (aka "Powerpoint") or save it as a .PDF to email to the teacher.

  4. I've often thought that once I have grandchildren, we'll definitely be doing Flat Stanley activities with them. We saw an older couple in Port Aransas taking pictures with a paper version of Flat Stanley. I knew right away what they were doing. How fun and exciting for you and your grandson and his lucky first grade class!!

  5. I've heard of Flat Stanley but Flat Joey looks just about perfect! Hope you have lots of fun with him. If you want to make a book, you can go to MyPublisher.com and make a book anyway you want it. It can be a little spendy but if you get a smaller book with not too many pages it's not too bad. I just made a couple of books for granddaughters and they LOVED them. Another idea is to put your photos and narrative on a flash drive and take it to Costco or some such and have some 8X10 prints made. Then put the prints in plastic sleeves that fit in a 3 ring binder. Good luck.

  6. I like that you're the most exciting person Flat Joey can think of to be on an adventure with! Go Gramma!

  7. What an interesting assignment for you. Looking forward to seeing it, so I hope you will share with us. BTW, you can get a small lightweight printer/scanner/copier at WM for about $30. Happy Tails and Trails, Penny, TX

  8. A friend has a Flat Stanley for her grandchild. She has it taped to the windshield of her motorhome and takes pictures going down the road and at parks.

  9. People are going to talk, seeing you out and about with this handsome guy. Maybe you can get him to wash your rig? ;c)

  10. What a fun project! I bet Flat Joey is going to have some real exciting adventures... and learn a lot while having fun. I don't know if your computer can burn CDs, but that would be another way to send along the stories. Just write them on Word and insert the photos... then burn that file to a CD to send back along with Joey.

  11. Our assignment was easier than yours. We just had to send a postcard to the class of the son of a former co-worker. We were on the east coast at the time so sent a picture postcard of a huge sailing ship at a maritime museum.

  12. What an adorable letter from your grandson. I just love little kids handwriting. What a neat idea and I don't imagine too many grandmas live in a swamp :)

  14. Flat Joey looks like he's ready to have some fun! What a lucky "boy"!
We've had a few flat nieces and nephews spend time with us over the years. Most of them were "life size"!
I sent them back with a little book of about their travels, which I made on the computer, then had the local FedEx/Kinko's store print the pages and attach with a simple spiral binding. (Not too spendy.) They were a big hit.
With computers in the classroom, maybe Flat Joey just needs a blog! Wouldn't that be fun? The whole class could follow along!

    Have fun!

  20. I have read about Flat Stanley on another blog. How much fun this could be. Maybe you can take your chip to a Walgreens or Walmart and get the pictures developed it isn't very expensive at all/ Have fun.

  23. I love the idea of this little guy. When we were in Mission, our friends had Flat Mary with them. She went to the restaurant, hiking, Mexico, etc. that grandchild had a ton to write about.

  25. Do you suppose there's a Flat Darren out there somewhere? We'll be seeing our almost 4-year-old great grandson in about a month. Maybe we'd better wait a year or two, what to you think?

  26. What a wonderful idea!!! Can you print at the visitor's center??

  27. Great idea, Judy. I'll have to look for that book to give to our first grandson expected this June. It'll be a few years before he'll be able to write us a letter though! Good printing, Joey.

  28. What a clever idea. I'll bet your's will be the best with all the adventures you go on. How many Flat Stanleys can copilot a big motor home?

  29. My niece in Mississippi received a flat boy from a friends son here in missouri...she spent a sunday taking her 'date' all over. The kids really get a kick out of seeing where there flat boy goes and all his adventures.

  30. That's absolutely darling! Flat Joey is going to have a great time with Grandma Bell. Just having him along on your usual daily activities is probably more exciting than anyone else "flat" will experience. Have fun - looking forward to seeing Flat Joey's adventures! :)

  31. I LOVE the idea of Flat Joey....what fun for all involved...Make sure you don't leave Flat Joey lying around and run over him....leaving a tire tread on his face!

  32. We were babysitting our great-nephews Flat Stanley for a while. He spent New Years in the Swiss Alps and then visited Germany. He has the pictures to prove it! Then we had pictures taken of him in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas and in Mexico. One good one is on the border bridge with him on the sign and half in each country.

I wonder if all the flat whomevers are related and do they have Flat family reunions each year.
