Talked to the scheduler today

Another overcast rainy day today, but the rain slacked off to just constant drizzles for most of the day.  It was a day spent mostly inside again.  In the early afternoon, I did get a phone call from Cindy, the person who will be making up the work schedule for the foreseeable future.  After determining that I was capable of running both visitors centers, she asked about conducting canoe tours.

I enjoyed doing that five years ago in the swamps of Alligator River NWR.  However, I’m five years older, have a persnickety right hip, and still can’t load and unload this stack of canoes.  Last time, a young healthy male intern did the loading and unloading for me.  Most if not all of the interns will be leaving in the next week or so, so I had to turn down that assignment.  Sad smile  Shucks!  It’s an interesting trip, and I loved telling the stories of the now gone Buffalo City.  It was a small backwoods community that did a lot of logging in the old days, and bootlegging during the Prohibition era of the 1930’s.

So, my schedule for this week includes three days in the two VCs.  More than I like, but Cindy assured me that things would change soon after she learned the ropes of operating both of them, and things calmed down from the interns and Abbey leaving.  We’ll see how that works out.

There will be no Soundside program for me this week on the Pamlico Sound, but Friday I’ll be free to do my shell hunt along the beach, and restock pamphlets on the back roads around Alligator River.

It was dry enough early this evening for Emma and I to sit outside for a change.  I noticed that some of the vines covering the trees are beginning to show some fall colors and berries.  I’d sure like to have the Hard Rock Bird Café set up here, but it’s out of the question.  Bears eat the same things that birds do, so not even a hummingbird feeder is allowed.  I bet the thrushes will be after these berries as they move through the area this fall.  That’s if the bears and turkeys don’t get them first.

I’ll be at the Gateway VC tomorrow, and I’m sure the rain will be gone now that I have to go back to work.

Thanks for stopping by… talk to you later,  Judy

  2. I think it is nice that she asked and when you said can't do, she understood.
Hope the dry weather heads your way very soon.

  3. Sad that you can no longer do the canoe tours. That would be an enjoyable task.

  4. Too bad the canoes are so heavy, you are right, that would be a lot of fun if it weren't for that part. It is why we got lighter kayaks! Too bad you have to trade birds for bears, but those little cubs are sure cute!

  5. I went into town today, and noticed some of the trees have a branch or two that are starting to turn yellowish red. Happy trails!

  6. Maybe going between the two VC's will keep the boredom factor down. I know autumn will be along soon, but I wish I could see signs of it here. It's still fire & brimstone in Sac.

  7. If your prediction holds up, at least you will bring back some good weather:)

  8. Your post reminded me that fall/winter is around the corner...well, depending on where you are at that time that is. Glad you & Emma got some outdoor time today.

  9. What, no "End" picture? You get a 0.0 score. :c)

Stick to your guns to get the best job that you want. Don't let them push you around (like they could)!

  10. The canoe job sounded like fun but I can certainly understand why you had to turn it down. The new scheduler sounds like a reasonable person.

  11. To bad all the interns are leaving and you can't do the canoe trips. Growing older is a bummer.

  12. This getting older is certainly a lot of pains everywhere. Hoping they find something else fun for you to do outdoors. No sign of Autumn here - we had record heat today.

  13. Especially like the shot of the Virginia Creeper... I love the way some of the leaves turn shades of red before the others turn. I think that and poison ivy berries kept our birds in Ohio in "fresh fruit" most of the winter. I'm allowed to hang bird feeders here, but I take them down at dusk every night to keep the bears out of them. I'll often have the little hummers waiting for breakfast when I put them up each morning. Too bad you can't have your feeders, but I guess I understand....

  15. Loved the beautiful vine shot...that's too bad you can't hang up the bird feeders, but it's understandable. I want to come see bears!

  17. So sorry you can't hang up your feeders but maybe you'll get to see more of the bears, at a distance of course. Might you see the wolves??

I don't see how any but a REALLY big and strong woman could get those canoes off that trailer for the canoe trips so it doesn't seem to be an age factor in that regard. So sorry to hear your hip would prohibit that even if you were permitted to get some gentlemen from those coming for the tour to help you with the canoes. Oh there are probably "liability" issues with that I suppose. SIGH.........

  18. At least we get good mornings, the storms hit right after noon.

  20. Actually, I would prefer NOT to be in a canoe paddling down something called "Alligator River"...NOSIREEBOB!...I would even do a fake limp to get out of that one!!

  21. We are heading into bear country and I had to tell John he won't be able to put his hummingbird feeder out.

  22. Nice pictures, Judy. We are seeing some leaves drop from trees already here in NW PA, and I can smell Fall in the air! Sorry to hear about all your indoor hours. Maybe it will all even out...
