Emma’s home

I couldn’t pick Emma up yesterday from her stay in the kennel for two reasons.  First, I didn’t get home until after the pick up time, and secondly I wanted her to have a bath, nail clip, and gland expression (what ever the heck that means).  The groomer has Tuesdays off, so I opted for a Wednesday pick up.

She was happy to see me for about 30 seconds until she noticed others in the room.  That’s the way she is.  She’d readily go live with someone else, anyone else.  A Lab she’s not.  I suppose we fit well together since we’re both of a sort of independent nature.  It’s just that my nature has slowed down a bit, and she’s still gung ho no matter what.  Oh well, we headed back to the rig and she collapsed in the bedroom to sleep the afternoon away.  She always comes back exhausted from her stays at the ‘spa’.  She sure smells good, and her hair feels fluffy.  It’s kind of ironic that her stay in the kennel was more expensive than what my trip cost me including gas money and the expensive motel.  I think there’s something wrong with that picture.

Parent Eastern Kingbirds were busy this evening feeding this year’s crop of young in the campground.  The red lining in the young bird’s mouth elicits a feeding response from the adult. (not a very good photo, but it’s a good demonstration of an adaptation)

As I expected, my sister Pam was not interested in just sitting around a campground for a week at Buckhorn COE park.  Stanley also wasn’t too thrilled with my description of the drive on the route they would be taking.  So today we went to plan B.  While I was wandering around on my way home yesterday I picked up quite a bit of info on eastern Kentucky.  I cancelled my reservation at Buckhorn, and made a new reservation at Jenny Wiley State Resort Park in Kentucky for a week.  There’s lots to see in the area, and since it’s a resort park, there’s even a matinee Broadway musical performance during the week we’ll be staying there.  In all of my travels, I’ve never seen a musical theater production at a state park before.  An additional perk was that Kentucky gives a 10% reduction in campground rates for seniors whether or not you are a state resident.  I appreciate that.  That means I’ll have a pull-through site with 50 amps and water for $19/night.  Cool beans!

Like much of the rest of the country, we’re experiencing a heat wave in Tennessee.  The temp at 8:00 tonight was 86*, so I donned my swimsuit as I’ve been accustomed to doing here and headed for the pool.  When I got there, it was locked up.  What’s up with that?  I’ll check that out tomorrow as the temps for the next four days or so are supposed to be 100+!

Thanks for stopping by… talk to you later,  Judy

  1. You're spoiling Emma rotten. Spending more on her than yourself.

Can you adopt me? I know how to lay around all day. :c)

  2. I'll bet Emma was really glad to see you. She just didn't want to get emotional around all those other folks. Glad you had a safe journey.

  3. Sounds like a nice park and should be a good area to explore. Oak Mt. State Park near Birmingham, AL also has an amphitheater but I think they only have concerts.

  4. It is kind of odd that I pay $15 for a haircut while the muttzo's are $45 each. What gives?

    1. Hi Rick, It is because their haircut takes a lot longer, and more equipment than yours does!

  5. Methinks there is a very good living to be made in dog grooming and boarding. But, too late for me to change careers.

  7. Of course you paid less...you didn't get a nail trim, a spa bath, or have your glands expressed!!

Sounds like a great stay you have planned at the resort park. Will be very interested to read about the musical theater production.

  8. The things we do to pamper our pooches!

I'm not sure I would want my glands expressed! Yikes!

  9. One of the surgeons and my daughter were discussing the surgery Jack had a year ago. He asked her if she knew what the vet charged. She didn't so she called me. I looked up the bill and called her back with just the surgery charge. She told the surgeon and after a couple of expletives he said, "That's more than I can charge for the exact same surgery! Unbelievable!"

Glad Emma is back with you and that you're back home.

  10. Gee, I wish someone would send me to a spa. I think Emma is leading the good life.

  11. Our dogs get excited for about two minutes and then could care less. As long as we feed them and give them a soft bed to sleep in, they're happy. Does she hang close to you for a day or two now? Glad you changed your plans. That other place just didn't sound that wonderful. And I can hardly wait to hear about the musical. Good luck staying cool and hope you get to swim tomorrow.

  12. I agree with spending more money on your dog, we spent $25 a day on Sammy when we flew to get on a cruise, and the cost for his bath/clip and express (anal glands) was expensive too!
But he came home tired, happy and clean. I guess that was good anyway.
Check on You Tube what "anal gland express" is. It's actually quite easy but most dog's don't need it unless they are rubbing their butt on the ground alot and can't poop regularly.
Sammy also has a short attention span when I collect him. he's happy to see me but alas there's lots of things going on, so it's a short lived greeting.
    Cheers!!

  13. I can't relate to Emma and her exhaustion after being at the spa...I have never been to one.

  14. I think the resort park in Kentucky sounds wonderful!

  15. Gland expression - lol! Better them than you, although Emma must take care of that herself usually.

I'm going to try that open-mouth thing next time I see an adult. It works with Annie, but she's resigned to feeding me.

  16. Hm. So that's where that expression, "Lucky Dog" comes from.

  17. So glad you had a safe trip visiting family & those grandchildren are beautiful! It's wonderful to celebrate such a great retirement with your daughter. Thanks to all your family's service to our country! Tom & I stayed at Jenny Wiley several times years ago & saw several plays, South Pacific, Hunchback of ND & The Story of Jenny Wiley. They were all really good! Another highlight was taking my Aunt & Uncle (who both loved the "real 'ole time Country Music"} up to Butcher Holler & met Loretta Lynn's brother at his country store. He took us to their childhood home & let us go in, look around & then spent a good hour with us on the front porch telling us about their childhood & Lorettie, as he called her. Great afternoon! They also had a group of square dancers come to the park CG for a rally & they taught some easy steps & line dancing. Lots of fun! Beautiful area too. I know you will enjoy your stay there...Tom & Lynn

  18. I thought ignoring us when we returned home was a "cat" thing... didn't know dogs played that game too. Cats like to put a guilt trip on you.... dogs? Anyway, I bet she's glad to be back in her own home again. Glad you're checking out that KY trip before heading into a disappointment.

  20. Kentucky is a beautiful place with some great state parks. Many years ago we stayed at Lake Barkley State Park in the Land Between the Lakes area. I'm looking forward to seeing what adventures you find. I'm surprised the pool was closed that early. Most places don't close them until 9 or 10 pm. Thanks for the bird identification yesterday :)

  21. I imagine Emma appreciates all you do for her. We have passed Jenny Wiley S P many times and did not stop. Looks like we will need to check it out.

  22. I'm so glad you made it back safely. Emma is a lucky dog to have found you. You're so good to her. We're experiencing extreme heat here in northern Wisconsin too! Got up at 6am to close all the windows and fire up the AC. It gets cool at night, and we can do without AC. Stay cool!!

  23. I'm sure Emma appreciates you ~ and smelling pretty after her "spa" day.

  24. It also seems that vets charge as much as our doctor! GNR stands for grand national rally. It is the annual gathering of Winnebago owners at the factory in forest city, Iowa.

  25. You'd think Pretty Emma would pose for her picture after a day in the spa. I guess they charge what the traffic will bear or at least that's what they say but it does seem out of whack that your whole trip was less than boarding your dog.

Sounds like a good park switch. I'll be anxious to see what you think of the "resort". 50 amps, water AND a broadway musical all for $19 is definitely "cool beans".

  27. The Traveling Longdogs get a "Spa" day in the sink with Johnson's baby shampoo. Gretchen likes to be cuddled and babied after hers but the boys just want down so they can run around doing their "wounded otter" routine. Expressing the glands isn't too bad when you have a dachshund but Harley is the only one who usually needs it. He gives a great impression of offended pouch when the time comes.
