When it rains, it pours…

And I’m not just talking about the weather.  Although, we have had about an inch and a half of rain the last few days which has put a damper on my hiking plans for my days off.  My title refers to fellow volunteers Sally and Tom.  If you remember, from a couple of days ago, they went off on a trip to visit family and friends in Georgia last week, but had to make an emergency trip along the way to Florida.  It turned out that Sally’s father had suddenly taken ill, and died once he got to the hospital.  It was a shock to them, but they returned last Wednesday to the refuge.  Then early Friday morning, Tom began to feel ill.  Today, he ended up being admitted to the hospital for cellulitis.  I don’t know too much about that, but I’ve been told it can be very painful.  My heart goes out to these folks.  What a stressful time for them.

With the wet weather, I’ve spent most of my time inside the rig.  I’m not complaining about that though since temps have remained in the 70’s.  Shirt sleeve weather in January!  While I took Emma outside during a lull in the sprinkles, I stood on the stool at the bottom of my stairs and pretended I was 5’ 8” tall.  It does give one a different perspective.  If I were that tall, I could reach the top shelves in the cupboards and wouldn’t need the step stool to get things out of the microwave or the top shelf of my refrigerator.   I think my youngest son is a little over 6’ tall.  Can’t imagine what that would be like.  I decided that dealing with an aging body and its limitations, like losing muscle strength and flexibility, and being a shrimp pretty much sucks.   Guess it’s a good thing I can escape in my mind to being  ♫ Wonder Woman!♫ ♪  Rolling on the floor laughing

I’ve watched Phyllis and Al pick up their Netflix mail almost daily, and am now thinking maybe I’ll sign up for that again.  I’m not always near a Red Box, but other than zipping from place to place, I always can get mail.  I’m feeling like I want to watch “Centennial” again, and it’s been years since I watched “Roots”.  I liked both of those mini-series.  Time will tell.  It’s time to have my taco salad, so I’ll say goodnight.

Thanks for stopping by… talk to you later,  Judy

  1. I really wish there were better internet connections on the road for a reasonable cost. Netflix streaming works great here at the house, but would probably not do so well with slow download speed or high data cost.

  2. I'm sorry to hear about the unfortunate chain of events that your friends are experiencing. I hope all goes well! Hey short stuff, you're not the only one who has step stools everywhere. My father-in-law built me a nice sturdy one, with an oval hole drilled in the center to carry it. Works great.

  3. I'm on the short side, too and always grabbing the step stool. I get so frustrated sometimes at not being able to see what's in the cabinet. I'd like to be able to reach just one thing; doesn't matter what it is.

    1. I, too, am vertically challenged, and I like it that way, even though I have step stools all over.
They say "Best things come in small packages", but I don't know about that, as I would rather have a motor home than a diamond!

  4. Sorry your fellow volunteers are having so much stress -- hopefully, things will straighten out for them very soon. I too understand the "short" issue -- if I could stretch my body, not only would I be taller, I'd be skinnier too! I'm not fat, I'm just under tall:)

  5. Myself...I am only short on one end..:-)) I keep the step stool out and leaning up against the couch next to our table...It's too bad about the luck of the volunteers there...One thing about your health..it can go South in a hurry...It's been damp and foggy here too...Looking forward to Fulton..different diggs and wildlife..Stay dry...

  6. So sorry to hear more bad news for Sally and Tom. Hope he makes a rapid recovery. I really don't think of myself as short at 5'4"...until I try to get something out of the cupboard. It seems all the cabinets in a motor home are too high. Keep that step stool handy.

  7. That is one of the advantages of being parked long term--Netflix movies! We watch something almost every evening which means we still need to stream some of them which doesn't work as well with our current electronics.

Why do they put microwaves so high in RVs? The ones in houses and apartments never require me to have Dave take things out of them in order to keep from burning myself with spilled hot food. And a step stool is not a good solution in that instance either. In all the RVs we've been in at dealers and at friends only once have I seen a microwave low enough for me to use it and they only did that one year then went back to the high ones again! We even checked to see if we could have that particular microwave put in our RV since it was a similar layout but the shop couldn't find a way to make it fit. It was something like 1/8th of an inch too wide.

  11. Can't even say how many times I've stood on a stool and thought how VERY much I'd like to be 5'8". Everything would be easier, including eating since there would be a lot more body to spread those pounds around.

Centennial and Roots, two of my favorites. I think we may need to get together to stand tall and watch them both.

  12. Cellulitis is staph that has gone from one's own skin through a tiny scratch or sore..into one's skin to infect the muscle or even the bone if not treated. If one has it on the head, it can go into the brain. Cellulitis is nothing to take lightly. If it goes in deeply, it will likely require strong antibiotics and regular warm compresses to treat it. OFten, no one can tell where that staph entered the skin. My husband had to have hospital treatment for three days to bring down the fever, then IV drip antibiotics for a month at home. Ugly stuff.

  13. Being taller might be all fine and dandy, but trust me, you bump your noggin' a lot more! And I got lumps to prove it.

  14. Yeah, just a couple more inches would sure come in handy around the motorhome (well, here at the stix & brix too).

  15. I have always felt too short for my height as well...

  16. When I was in high school I hated being tall cause I was taller than all the boys, now it's the one thing I wouldn't trade for anything. I would trade the decreased flexibility, aches and pains though if anyone wants them.

  17. I am 5'7". Still there are cabinets in the fiver where I need to get the step stool to reach top shelves. Luckily microwave is not an issue. But I have been in rigs where it would be. Wondering, what were they thinking?

  18. I also have issues with the microwave and all upper cabinets. While I understand there isn't much room for a counter microwave it is very dangerous for it to be so high. I have spilled hot soup before and I was lucky not to burn myself. I sure made a mess.

Its funny the things we think about when it rains and we have to stay inside. :) Hope it clears up soon.

  19. The wetlands must be really wet now, with all this rain. Our front stoop is growing moss! Hope it is NOT raining or foggy tomorrow morning... C U around 8 am. Should we bring/wear our rubber boots?

  20. Sorry to hear of your friends misfortunes, seems sometimes the stress from one situation leaves our bodies vulnerable to illness.
I agree w/ Jana, in high school we were put by height during graduation...it was me and the basketball team in the last row and I was taller than most of them. At one time I was 5'10 inches, spinal issues have decreased that somewhat...and yep you wind up hitting your head on things, especially when someone opens a cabinet in front of you and whap you get it.
