A day of wandering thoughts

My plan for this morning was to do laundry and some grocery shopping.  However, last night just before sunset I heard a ruckus outside.

Turns out that Dean had arrived with a Ditch Witch to dig a trench for the new 50 amp electrical cable.  It has been lying on top of the ground for several weeks, and I guess he finally decided to bury it today.

I cancelled my plan to go anywhere today so I could be around to make sure I got my DISH cable out of the way.  It didn’t take him long to dig the very long trench since the soil here is very sandy with no rocks.  The only obstacles are tree roots, and the witch went right through them.  I expected that he would then get the cable underground and fill in the ditch.  So, I waited around to make sure nothing of mine was in the way.  That never happened.  Now there are a couple of hundred yard long ditches dug out, but the cable hasn’t been buried yet.  Don’t know what effect tonight’s forecasted rain might have on that.

My friend, Jack, would say that it’s just another example of how this campground is just a hobby for Dean.  That may be, but very soon I will have to make a decision of whether or not to return here next year.  I don’t have very many choices this close to my daughter’s house.  My mind keeps flipping back and forth over this decision.

On the rats with fluffy tails front, it’s probably a good thing I stayed home today.  Emma and I stood guard all day reminding these buggers that we’re home now.  Steaming mad No more welfare meals and feeder destruction for the time being.

I’ve also been thinking about the cookout next week.  Both of my brothers are coming and one of their wives.  If Robyn doesn’t have to do a life vest fitting, she and the grandgirls will also come.  I need to decide if I’ll ask them to help me take down some Christmas lights that surround a good portion of the site, but don’t work.  I think they’re ugly, but I’m a little reluctant to climb up on a ladder to get them down myself without someone around.  My balance just isn’t what it used to be.

The other day I included a collage of water lily pictures that I took at the Chicago Botanic Garden in one of my posts.  I decided to use that collage as my laptop background, and I found that I just can’t stop looking at the middle picture in the collage.  I just love the reflection in the little pool of rainwater on the pad, and the shadow of the bloom on the pad and water.  I really like it, and it isn’t even a picture of a bird.  Smile

Thanks for stopping by… talk to you later,  Judy

  1. Rats with fluffy tails?? I will have to remember that:))

I would agree that after all that work to dig the trench, that he would have taken the time to drop the cable in and fill it in. Heavy rains may well ruin what has been done so far.

We also struggle a bit in deciding what to do when in a marginal place that is in a ideal place for us. Good luck with that decision.

  2. I can't believe he dug the trench and didn't go ahead and bury the cable. Still, it is a nice location for you and a beautiful site. Who will the squirrels irritate if you aren't there?

Have a great time with your family, and good luck getting the lights down.

  4. I like the description - rats with fluffy tails. If you can handle the very laid back campground owner, it definitely is a great place to be able to visit your family. I hate decisions like that. Good luck.

  7. It's because you are a great photographer no matter the subject girl!!!

~you know that old saying... "men, you can't live with them.." well, you can't live with them without telling what to do sometimes!! it gets things done...

  10. Love that lily picture!

I notice in one of your pictures, one of your neighbors has a screen house set up. Do they have any problem with stormy, windy weather? How is it anchored?

  11. If you were in NM, Dean's method of getting things done would be called "being in the mañana zone"! You know, why do today what you can put off till tomorrow!

  13. Sometimes the most convenient places aren't at the best campgrounds. The one we're at now is an example...but it is close to family, just like the one you're at.

The water lily is really a beautiful photo.

  15. I can remember the good ole days, when we had fields surrounding us and chicken hawks, no squirrels would be found, the hawks had a field day. Now that it is built up we are over run with the rats with tails. Be safe out there, Sam & Donna.

  16. Thanks for the lovely waterlily photo..You're right...It is mezmorizing..As for ladders...they are for firemen and younger kids...stay off if you aren't sure...Our tired bodies know what's smart to try and what to let fall by the wayside..Yea, I would be thinking of maybe another park next year...if there is one..If not, suck it up and "just do it" again.:-))

  18. I hope you're at least getting a good price at this campground to make up for the "hobby" owner mentality! I love all of your pictures.

  19. Stunning reflection in the water lilies photo!

I had a friend that called squirrels: rats with designer tails! I like your version better! :)

Too bad Dean doesn't make the RV Park a Job, instead of a hobby! I know what you mean about parking close to family!

  20. My unsolicited opinion: do NOT return to the same RV Park next year. Being close to your daughter and grandchildren may be a good thing but you have paid an 'emotional' price by staying in the current Park. It is not going to be any better next year unless there is new management.

  21. It sounds like your struggle to make a decision is an indication of what your decision ought to be. I love the color of the lily in your picture.

  23. We finally found what we think is the best campground "back home" but we have to mow our own grass and, while there is a power mower, there is no trimmer. Dave said he hadn't mowed grass since 1993! And we're still an hour away from a lot of our friends but only a half-hour from most of our doctors. Their are a couple other long-term parks but one floods every summer and another charges our friends/family $4 each to come visit us! We could stay in more convenient places if we were willing to make reservations a year in advance and stay only 2 weeks at each of them. That's not going to happen. So we all make the best we can with what we get to be where we want to be. Now that you have power again yours doesn't sound too bad. :)

  24. My mother used to live in South Africa and they called them tree rats there.
But we are very envious of the Ditch Witch - we really could have done with that here on a few occasions!

  25. I have a friend in Wisconsin that tells me that there are some Bald Eagles that migrate through there and when they are there, the squirrel population gets decimated.
    Love the water lilies too.
Do they usually need more volunteers when you have been at Anahuac NWR or do they fill all their positions?
