Quilt update

Remember when I spent a Sunday afternoon at the beginning of February cutting apart IMG_9001

25 t-shirts to send away to have a memory quilt made?  Well, today I heard from KAREN (aka fabgrandma), who’s putting it together for me.

P3220011-570x427

For anyone who’s interested, just click on her name (above) and it will take you to her blog.  She’s posting a tutorial on how to assemble such a quilt.  Of course, if you are a non-sewing person like me, she would be happy to put one together for you.  Smile  The quilt top is almost ready to be sent off to someone like JANNA that has a long arm (?) quilting machine.   I’m really excited about how the quilt is coming along!  Karen’s plan is to have it all done and sent to me by the middle of May.  Since I wanted to have this quilt done as a celebration of my first five years on the road, it will work out perfectly!  I can just imagine going off to dreamland cocooned in my travel memories.  Each of those blocks represents cherished times on the road.

That block, dead center, is the US Fish and Wildlife Service Volunteer logo.  I asked her to place that in the middle since I’m nearing 4000 hours volunteering at National Wildlife Refuges.  What a great ride that has been!  Guess I’d better quit now before I get all gushy about the wonderful time I’ve had these past five years.  Life is surely a trip!!

Thanks for stopping by…. talk to you later,  Judy

  5. Looks great! You'll be nice and comfy sleeping under that. I love quilts, have wanted to make one, but just buy them at antique stores or flea markets instead.

  8. You are amazing. 4000 hours is incredible. And what a neat way to remember all those wonderful memories. Now I want to take all of Jim's t-shirts and get Karen to make me one. But - I have a problem. Jim doesn't want to give up his shirts yet. Guess I'm going to have to work on him for awhile.

  9. I was telling a friend of mine about your quilt this afternoon! She is a professional quilter and does similar work for people who do dog shows.

She said it is particularly hard to work with the tee shirt material and that you have to have knack for it.

    I've never quilted, so I don't know.

    the quilt looks great!

  14. What a great momento of your years of service. You are truly an inspiration. The quilt looks beautiful. I went to Karen's site and read all about how she made this. I am not a quilter so I was amazed at how she put this all together.

  16. A truly unique idea for old T-shirts. If I would have done that I'm afraid the quilt would have been very breezy with all the holes in it. Congrats on the 4000 hours of volunteer service. I think it takes a special kind of person to stick with something like that but as long as one enjoys their work I do understand that feeling of personal satisfaction inside.

My head was spinning when I read part of the tutorial! Too much quilting math, computer programming is so much easier!

  24. Wish you had posted this BEFORE I downsized. I would have a t-shirt quilt!! But, then again, I have oodles of quilts that my Mom and Grandmother made and I love the memories that are held in those pieces of fabric.
Judy, I so admire your hard work to protect and preserve our wildlife. It has to be very fulfilling. Thank you!
