Yellow fever?

Even though the sun was shining when I got up today, I decided to spend the day at the rig.  That was a good decision, as it turned out, because my intestinal fortitude wasn’t up to snuff.  :(  (I know, TMI!)  So, I spent most of my time today on the computer.

One of the things I did was download the Guest Ticket Booklet for my upcoming repositioning cruise from Barcelona, Spain, to Galveston, Texas.  That little booklet was 26 pages long!  I haven’t read all of it yet, but as it was printing, I noticed something about immunizations.  They suggested possibly getting a yellow fever shot.  I know I’ve never had one of those.  I remember having a small pox vaccination before I went to college that was very unpleasant, but yellow fever?  I’ve never been on a cruise before or gone to Europe.  Does anyone know if this is a real danger?  I asked the person setting everything up for the cruise, but her only comment was to check with my physician.  My doctor is in Minnesota, I’m stuck in Boise, and will be heading for Texas soon, I hope.  What a dilemma.

Get a load of the problems with this rig that has been here for about a week.  It left today, but with the front looking the same.  Kind of makes me glad I’m just waiting for levelers!  I don’t know what it is they fixed, but it sure wasn’t cosmetic surgery.  :)

I’ve been spending quite a bit of time lately mulling over my future plans.  Everything’s taken care of for this winter, but what about next summer?  I’ve been volunteering pretty solidly since I hit the road in 2006, but this summer outside of Yellowstone made me appreciate the fact that I am retired!  I’ve also felt a tug inside to become better acquainted with my five grandchildren.  They’re all under the age of five, but growing up, I remember how important my grandmothers were to me.  They were both gone by the time I was 12, but I still cherish their memory.  So, I’ve just about decided to purchase a site at the Woodhaven Lakes RV Resort in Sublette, Il.  That would put me fairly close to all of them during the summers, and within two hours of my sister and brothers.  I’ve been offered a pretty sweet deal on a site thanks to my daughter Robyn’s in-laws.  So I spent this afternoon surfing the web about what there is to see and do in Northwest Illinois.  I’m thinking this could be a good plan for me, and if it doesn’t work out, I can always sell the site and move on.  :)
_MG_6084I’m not sure this plant or bug will be around tomorrow, as the forecast is for a frost tonight.  I just hope I get out of here before that white stuff starts falling down out of the skies!  :)

Thanks for stopping by….talk to you later,  Judy

  3. That site in Illinois sounds interesting. At least you would be in the middle of the country pretty much so you'd be in a good spot for trips.

I wonder what that MH ran into?

  4. Any chance you can call your doctor and get a consult over the phone?
I haven't cruised anywhere but Bahamas and Mexico so not sure about Yellow Fever as never got a shot for that.
I only got my regular flu shot and the H1N1 that year.
    Nice shot of the bug!

I hope you are able to move along before the snow flies as well!

  5. Judy you are so right in that once the time has passed with the Grands and they get older, you cannot regain that opportunity. It is gone. I think the purchase of your own lot is a sound idea and can totally understand your thinking. This is one reason we return to Tumwater 3 to 4 times each year and stay for a while....those grandkids!

  6. Spending the summer near your grandchildren so they can get to know you, and you them sounds like a wonderful plan to me. They do grow up way to fast.

Our 3 grandsons live within a mile from us and we get to see them almost everyday and also attend all of their school functions and sports events. We love it and they love having us there. They are the main reason we don't consider going fulltime.

Hope your parts come in soon so you can get out of Dodge!!

  7. I don't know what's happened in Barcelona that things have changed, but we cruised from Barcelona all around the Med last February and there was no yellow fever...only that cursed flu that hits cruise ships that time of year in Europe. We were never advised to have a yellow fever shot nor did we get one. So if yellow fever is running on cruises nowadays, that's a new one.

  8. We have been to Spain 3 times and never had a yellow fever shot. No worries. Barcelona is one of our favorite places-visit park guell, the big market, the picasso muesuem and drink some sangria and watch the crazyness on Las Ramblas.
Only thing to worry about in Spain is pick pockets. Keep your hands on your money. It is a wonderful city - can't wait to see your pictures.

  9. Both Kelly & I have a tendency to avoid all those anti this & anti that shots over the years. We avoid the flu shots as well. Same with our animals. Vets are always wanting to give them shots for this & that but we have avoided that money pit as well. So far, aside from my virus stint this past summer we have all been healthy & just fine....despite all the great scares of the medical world. Both human & animal.

  10. That's a great idea on having a sight by your family, sort like a home base, Plus you would be within a 4-5 hour drive of the St Louis/ St Charles MO. area and could come for a visit at our place, wouldn't need your rig, because we have an extra bedroom and Emma is welcome, Rigg's has never met another dog he didn't like, except for the one that bit him and he chased off, but ten minutes later he forgot about it. By the looks of the other rig it looks like he back ended something. the only shots I get now is a flu shot and only because for the last few years of my police career it was mandatory and I think they do some good because I rarely get sick.Hey, be safe out there and get back on the road. Sam & Donna.

  11. I can't imagine why you'd need the Yellow Fever shot for a repositioning cruise out of Barcelona. You don't say what your ports will be once you make the crossing, but unless you plan to spend time in a jungle somewhere, I wouldn't think it's necessary. Check this site for information on requirements/recommendations for the countries you'll be visiting. (http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/destinations/list.aspx)

  12. We never used to get flu shots, even when we were working. However, on our first winter on the road, being around thousands of people in AZ, we came down with a horrible 10-day flu! Never again! We get our flu shots every year since, no problem. Perhaps Yellow Fever is the latest wave of infections hitting the cruise lines!

What a wonderful area to cruise! I hear Spain is wonderful!

Oh my, frost warnings, that sounds like it's getting cold!! Sure hope those parts get in before you have to deal with driving in snow!

Kids grow so fast! Next summer's plan seems like a good idea!

  13. Oh, Judy, our white stuff falling from the skies is pretty--at least it has held off this year--October 5th last year--two feet!!!!!

  17. Are you kidding?? Sublette is about 40 miles from Sandwich....We almost bought our GMC from a car dealer there...You will be in the middle of corn fields, but lots of places to travel within reach..including the Mississippi River Road (Great River Road), and Galena is really a neat old town....I see a great plan forming....and I salute you for wanting to bond with the grandkids..making a different kind of memories...ones you will cherish forever!! Plus, you could stop by here, share a bottle of wine...yeah???

  18. I checked out the website for Woodhaven and was amazed at the reasonable prices. Sounds like a great idea to have a lot there to be close to your family for part of the year.

  19. I have traveled all over Europe and and never needed a yellow fever. I had a yellow fever shot bu that was for travel to Africa. I would not worry about that.

The RV spot sounds pretty good and very reasonable compared to those we have looked at.

  20. As a life-long Illinoisan I had never heard of Sublette. But there it is on the prairie near Sterling. Sounds like a great plan to get to know the grandchildren better. How about a one week trip with each child as a special co-pilot with grandma? Now that is something they would never forget.
